David Brown Obituary

Dr. David Brown

July 27, 2022

Teacher, father, husband. Dr. David Brown was faculty at the UNMC's College of Dentistry for 40 years. He is survived by his wife and 3 children. An intelligent and witty individual who enlightened those around him. He is greatly missed.

Dr. Brown was instrumental in helping thousands of Nebraskans receive oral health care through the college's outreach events, including Children's Dental Day and SHARING Clinics, and through building college partnerships with organizations like Clinic with a Heart.

Additionally, due to his efforts, the college participated in hundreds of community events where thousands of Nebraskans received oral health education and screenings. Dr. Brown taught generations of students the importance of helping the underserved. Through his passion for helping others and his leadership, he touched the lives of countless community members, students, faculty and staff.

I think about David all the time, in every NE Dental Public Health endeavor that I participate in, I often wonder...."what would Dr. Brown do?" And his example always leads me in the right direction...Fritz

David was a very dedicated member of the leadership team at our College of Dentistry. During the 14 years we worked together while I was dean, David was instrumental in organizing, guiding, and overseeing many new service-learning programs through which students, faculty, and staff were given the opportunity to provide care for patients who could not afford treatment. Programs such as the Lincoln and Panhandle Children's Dental Days, the dental SHARING Clinic, the Grand Island Extraction Clinic and Lincoln´s Clinic with a Heart were initiated. Countless underserved patients benefited from the treatment they received through these programs. Hundreds of dental and dental hygiene students not only grew in technical abilities but also in their understanding and appreciation of the value of giving back to the needy. One of David´s great legacies is the success of these programs, as well as the benefits to all who participated.

We worked with Dr. Brown on at least 25 community outreach events. His networking skills and ability to coordinate local resources into a professional team effort were remarkable.
These talents allowed him to identify underserved people with urgent dental needs and then quickly get them access to treatment. This took much of his personnel time but he did it because he cared about others and wanted to make a difference. Such an amazing and honorable man....an inspiration never to be forgotten!

Thoughts and prayers to all of Dr. Brown´s family and friends for your great loss. I had the great privilege of working closely with Dr. Brown for many years. His dedication to the college and its mission and outreach is unsurpassed. He will be forever remembered as one of the most capable, dependable and conscientious leaders the college has ever had. His energy and commitment to accomplishing the many tasks before him were remarkable, and a bit intimidating. No one could ever outwork Dr. Brown. But what I will remember most is that David Brown cared. He cared deeply about the college, all the people who learn and work here, and all of the people that the college serves and can serve. I will also fondly remember his dry and witty sense of humor. Thank you, David, for so many jobs very well done.

My sincere sympathy to the family. Dr Brown was such a wonderful person! He had such a heart for the dental world and caring for those who were in need. And we shared a love of Husker Football and had so many conversations about the team. He loved his family deeply. Please let me know if you need anything.
