George Welch Obituary

Dr. George L. Welch, 70, Hastings, died Sunday (2/29/04) at home. Born, St. Joseph, Mo. (4/3/33), to George L. Sr. and Irene (Bray) Welch. Received MD from State University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1958. He did a cardiology fellowship at University of Kansas. On June 17, 1955, he married Charlotte Dafoe in Shenandoah, Iowa. Dr. Welch began his medical practice in Hastings in 1964. During the Vietnam War, he was called into service and served as chairman of the department of medicine at Reynolds Army Hospital at Fort Sill, Okla. He returned to Hastings and continued his practice until retiring from private practice in 1991. He worked for three years at Veterans Administration Hospital in Grand Island until retiring in 1995. He was a member of Adams County Medical Society, the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology. He had a lifetime enjoyment of golf, family and home.

Survivors: wife, Charlotte Welch, Hastings; son, daughter-in-law, John C. and Margaret Welch, Hastings; daughters, sons-in-law, Jennifer and Larry Schmitt, Chillicothe, Ohio, Janet and Jeffrey Matthes, Barbara and Arthur Molnar, all Lincoln; 12 grandchildren. Dr. Welch was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial services: 2:30 p.m. Thursday, First UnitedMethodist Church, Hastings. Private family burial prior to service at Parkview Cemetery, Hastings. Memorials to Hastings Foundation. Butler-Volland Funeral Home, Hastings. Condolences and obituary may be accessed at www.lbvfh.com.
