Back in 1957, Glenn Miller swooped in on his airplane and hired my father, Bayne Grubb to work with him. At that time we didn't know how big an impact that collaboration would have on our family. For years dad left each April coming back in time for Thanksgiving as he worked his way from southern Texas to the Canadian border. These were good years for both Dad and Glenn, getting in the plane flying across the great plains looking for grass seed, then landing at a one-stop sign town and driving across country to make a deal and set–up the combines, drying fields and trucks. Making business deals and friends along the way, changing the face of the country, nurturing the land - sowing and harvesting big blue, needle grass, and all the rest from fields large and small. Dad and Glenn had a special relationship, working from a distance (now-days it would be considered telecommuting) back then often they weren’t within 50 miles of a telephone, however, they persevered through bad weather, accidents and all the good times. And the west is better for it. So the next time you see one of those never ending fields with the grass blowing gently in the wind - think of Glenn Miller.
