Mary Nielsen Obituary

Mary Elizabeth "Betty" (Booker) Nielsen

May 25, 1934 - January 3, 2025

Betty spent her life serving others - first in her dad's hardware store, then as a speech therapist, and especially as a wonderful mom, caregiver, grandma, and community and church volunteer.

Betty graduated from Neche High School (ND), the University of North Dakota, and Northwestern University. In 1959, she married Paul Nielsen and together they had three children. They lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Huron, South Dakota before moving to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1977.

Survivors include son, John (Sharon) Nielsen; daughters, Jeanne Nielsen and Barb (Nolan) Schmit; grandchildren, Beth Nielsen, Paul Nielsen, Madeline Schmit (Ellen Schnacker), Katherine Schmit, and Peter Schmit; sister-in-law, cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband, Paul, parents, John and Pauline Booker; and brother, Bob Booker.

Much gratitude to the caring and professional staff at Legacy Estates and to her many loving friends.

Memorial service Wednesday, January 8 at 1pm; gathering with family present Tuesday, January 7, 2025, from 4 until 6 p.m. - both at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 8320 South Street, Lincoln, NE.

Betty was one of the sweetest ladies I have ever known. She always had a smile on her face. She was a caring person who would ask about my family and others in our church so she could pray for them or communicate with them. She will be missed. Love and blessings to her family.
