Michael Sullivan Obituary

Michael T. Sullivan

March 4, 1950 - November 2, 2024

Michael T. Sullivan, Md, 74, of Fairfield, Pa., passed away unexpectedly on November 2, 2024, in Gettysburg, Pa.

Michael was born March 4, 1950, in Lincoln, Neb., the son of Bernard P. Sullivan and Jean W. Wells.

Michael graduated from Pius X High School in 1968 and as valedictorian from Regis University in 1972 with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry.

Michael pursued a medical career on a US Navy Scholarship, graduating in 1975 from University of Nebraska Medical School, and in 1978 from residency in Internal Medicine in New Orleans, La. He served as a physician in the United States Navy until honorably discharged in 1982.

Following the Navy, Michael worked at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa., until 1994. In 1994, he and, then wife, Gianna Talone Sullivan, launched Mission of Mercy, a free mobile medical ministry, with the mission to restore dignity, healing through Love, by providing free healthcare. This year was Michael's 30th year as Medical Director of Mission of Mercy and 50th year as a physician.

Michael received the Outstanding Alumni Award from Pius X High School in 2012 and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014 for his work at Mission of Mercy.

Michael was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fairfield, Pa., though he was a familiar face at every local Catholic Church, no matter the mass time. Daily mass was the most important part of his day and what gave him the strength to give himself completely to his work.

Michael was well known for his great sense of humor, love of the game of basketball, devotion to his Catholic faith, and selflessness with which he served his patients and community.

Remaining to cherish Michael's memory are his daughters, Chelsea Randolph, her husband, John; Anne Marie Jaeckel, her wife, Caitlin; beloved grandchildren, Jaxon, Harper and Isla; his sisters, Maureen Liddle, her husband, David, and Jan Sullivan-Campbell and her husband, Ken. Michael is also survived by many nieces and nephews, dear friends and hundreds of patients and volunteers whom he served with great love.

Preceding Michael in death are his parents, Bernard and Jean Sullivan.

Michael will forever be remembered by all who knew him with great love, gratitude, and admiration.

My condolences for the passing of this kind-hearted doctor that helped many that needed medical assistance. May he rest in Christ.

Dr. Sullivan truly showed what it was to "welcome the stranger." As a college student, I got to volunteer as a translator with the mission and saw the kindness with which he treated many members of our immigrant community. He was a pioneer and also a lifeline to many of these people who would have otherwise gone without needed medical care. His impact in their lives is long lasting.

Dr. Sullivan was a great blessing to Frederick and it's surrounding communities. The impacts he made sharing his gifts were immeasurable. His kindness and humility was palpable to all who received his care, and to those who served with him. His legacy will surly thrive.

I was informed of it today. I did not maintain a friendship with Dr. Sullivan; our meeting took place weeks before his passing. In him, I perceived a glimmer of optimism that lingers in my thoughts, convincing me that he was and will be an exceptional man.

Regardless of what his legacy may be, it will have an enormously positive impact on those who had the privilege of knowing him and on those of us who only caught a glimpse of his love for the mission of restoring dignity, healing through love.

I consider that their radiance shone with the brightness of Christ. Despite it being the first and last encounter, I will evoke it in my prayers every time I participate in the Eucharist.

O Lord, let everlasting light shine upon him.
Rest in peace.

Mike and I were medical school room mates for 2 1/2 years, this despite never having met before. Will always remember him as one of the happiest people I have ever met and how his happiness was contagious to all those around him. The last 50 years since we graduated have flown by way to quickly.
