Richard Dean Confer

September 2, 1935 - March 31, 2025

Richard Dean "Dick" Confer, 89, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2025, at The Legacy in Lincoln, Neb.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 10 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 1144 M Street, Lincoln, NE. A celebration of life with a light lunch will follow the service.

Born on September 2, 1935, in Trenton, Neb., at the home of his grandparents, Richard was the child of Claude Welcome Confer and Esther Charlotte (Brown) Confer. During high school, he was actively involved in wrestling, football, and 4-H. After graduating, he attended McCook Community College.

Richard began his career working various jobs, including time on the railroad. On October 1, 1956, he joined Lincoln Telephone Company, where he remained for 42 years until retiring on August 1, 1998. Not one to stay idle for long, Richard later became a school bus driver and continued in that role for another 15 years before retiring again.

His passion for horses led them to own several quarter horses and participate in judging competitions at the Nebraska State Fair and the Lancaster Event Center. Richard played an active role in the development of the Lancaster County Event Center and supported the local 4-H program.

A devoted Husker fan and longtime season football ticket holder, Richard proudly cheered on Nebraska teams Go Big Red!

He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude Welcome and Esther Charlotte (Brown) Confer; spouse, Dorothy "Cookie" Confer; son, Dirk Louis Murphy; and loyal canine companion, Bobby Confer.

Survived by his children, Monica (Kevin) Fischer, Dorinda Wehde, Richard Confer II, Robyn Confer; stepdaughter, Denise (Steve) Rodenburg; 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren - one arriving in the fall.

Richard's memory will live on through those who knew them and shared in his many passions.

My husband Ken Stading knew him through the Capital City Horse Club and enjoyed knowing him very much. Dick always wore a cowboy hat like my husband Ken did.

Dick was a wonderful person. I knew Dick thru riding horses back in the 70-80's. Here is a picture at the Cchpc Awards banquet at Val's 1991. My girls just loved him. He will be deeply missed. Sorry for your loss.
