Suzanne Marie Kirkland

Suzanne Marie (Dort) Kirkland, passed away November 20, 2023. She was 77 years old. Sue was born May 31, 1946 to Douglas and Eileen (Donley) Dort.
Sue was raised in Lincoln and graduated from Southeast High School in 1964. She went on to graduate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she was a member of the Delta Gamma Fraternity. She absolutely loved her family, friends and meeting new people. Professionally, she worked for years in law office administration, followed by her most rewarding tenure as Assistant Dean & Director of Career Services at the University of Nebraska, College of Law. She began her public service career as Clerk of the District Court for Lancaster County, where she was elected three times. As busy as she was being a full-time career woman and single Mom, she still made time to volunteer for many political campaigns, serve on the board of her beloved Delta Gamma as their House Corporation President, Junior League of Lincoln and on the Nebraska Coalition for Victims of Crime.
She is survived by her son, Matthew (Jennifer) Kirkland and daughter, Karie (Rich) McKinley. Her grandchildren, Patrick (Kelly) Kirkland, great granddaughter Penelope Kirkland, Kaley (Reid) Walker, Charlie and Teddie Kirkland, Kate Overstreet, Nick Overstreet and Shannon (Andrew Zahn) McKinley and Shawn McKinley. She will also be missed by her siblings, Stephanie (John) Bryn and Nancy (Larry) Rossow and nieces and nephews, Brandon (Nicole) Bryn, Kristina (Grant) Nolan and Marie and Mara Rossow.
She is preceded in death by parents, Douglas M. and Eileen M. Dort and brother, Michael D. Dort.
The service will take place at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at 3:00 PM. Followed by the "Suelebration of Life" at The Country Club of Lincoln, 4:00 PM.

My deepest sympathy to Sue's family. She was a beautiful lady. Willing to take on the world. A big hole left the in life of many. Rest in peace Sue. I was glad you took over that office.
