Reverend William A. Kalin
April 28, 1933 - February 23, 2022
On Wednesday last, Fr. Bill Kalin celebrated Mass with his brother priests, enjoyed breakfast, and returned to his room. There he passed away, suddenly. He was 88 years old, a priest of the Lincoln diocese for nearly 63 years. In some ways he was an ordinary parish priest. But in other ways he was extraordinary. His ministries included caring for the sick and dying and the imprisoned and impoverished across two continents, in Nebraska, Oregon, and Venezuela. He especially loved the poor and in the dry barrios of Barquisimeto, teeming with children, he labored for twenty years, first helping to establish a thriving parish, and then a school for children whose families were the poorest of the poor.
Fr. Bill was fun too. He loved to tell stories, often hilarious, about encounters with human folly, including his own. Ski slopes and blackjack were his outlet and he was good at both. His mother, Emma, prayed always - even that he would lose at blackjack. His father Ben, a pharmacist, rode a bicycle to and from work, sometimes with Bill on the handlebars. Together, Ben and Emma worked in deep faith to raise 10 children. All are gone now except the youngest, Mary Jo and brother-in-law Dr. Larry Rice of Omaha. Father Bill is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Earth will miss Fr. Bill Kalin, but heaven is jumping with joy. He's home at last!
Join us to celebrate the funeral Mass at Lincoln's Cathedral of the Risen Christ, March 3, at 11: 00 AM. Rosary precedes at 10:30. Burial at Calvary Cemetery. Lunch follows. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Villa Marie School, Matt Talbot Kitchen, or Propagation of the Faith. Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements. A dedicated priest to the poor and downtrodden in his missionary apostolate. Think of him often as when last visited the Bonicom Residence.

Miss his humor and experiences of commitment to the poor in Venezuela. He enjoyed company and was saddened his health had slowed him down.

My condolences to the family. I met Fr. Kalin in Venezuela when I was just a kid. I remember he had a great friendly personality that called my attention and he used to tell jokes when he was in the English class I attended secondary school. This is a very long story, but I will summarized saying that he worried a lot for the poor people he met in the Parish he was at. He had a school where I taught Sixth grade and where he helped the students as much as he could. Thanks to him and Fr. McCabe I went to Falls City, Nebraska where I housed with Mr. and Mrs. Kopetzky for a school year. Then I came back and helped him in some of his activities in the parish. I will miss Fr. Kalin, he will be always in my mind and in my heart. I am sure Our Lord has a special place for him up in Heaven. Thank for the opportunity.

I graduated from Jr. High at St.Mary's and was a classmate of Mary Jo (might have been one year older )-- I remember Father Bill was very tall and used to shoot baskets with us behind the school. He had a great friendly personality. I was an altar boy and served for him --He always tried to teach us about our faith . He was certainly a blessed man.

Condolences to the family. I too will miss his humor and jokes about self, relatives and the Church. Pray God he will meet my brother Fr. John (Jack) who part of his 1959 Ordination class. May the Good Lord be kind to him as he was so many while working to make their physical and spiritual life better.
