Gus Vassos Obituary

KENOSHA - Gus Vassos, age 71, passed away on Monday, December 16, 2013 at United Hospital Systems-St. Catherine’s Campus. Born on August 20, 1942 in Sanga, Greece, he was the son of the late Vasilios and Hrisoula (Mavrogiannis) Vasilopoulos. He was raised and educated in Greece and also served in the Greek Army before coming to the states. Gus was united in marriage to Anastasia “Ann” Liapis in Chicago, IL in 1970. They were blessed with three children and 43 years of marriage. He was a member of Kimissis tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church in Racine and also a member of AHEPA, the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association. Known as the “Mayor of Menards”, Gus loved fixing things and was always in search of a bargain. As a hard working immigrant, Gus co-owned and operated Papa Gus Restaurant in Arlington Heights, IL, Three Coins Restaurant in Kenosha for 27 years and Golden Keys Restaurant in Racine. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Anastasia; their three children, Bill (Megan) Vassos, Hrisoula (Harry) Sdralis and Prokopios (Tracy) Vassos; his brother, Steve (Toula) Vassilopoulos; a sister, Georgia Demis and seven grandchildren, Chris, Tasia, Kali, Anastasia, Kosta, Kostandino and Lukas. Gus is further survived by loving family members, friends and countless customers that he met over the years. In addition to his parents, Gus was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Giannis Demis. A Divine Liturgy will be held on Friday, December 20, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Chrysostomos Greek Orthodox Monastery, 4600 93rd Street in Pleasant Prairie, with the interment to follow in their cemetery. Relatives and friends are asked to meet at the Monastery. I just heard the sad news about Mr Gus, he will be sadly missed. I will cherish the many good memories that we shared and the closeness of our families! So sorry I didn't know until Tammy ran into bill today! He will be with all the family members gone before an I bet my dad was one of the first to welcome him home.........Love from all of us!
