Nicholas C. Karegeannes
Jan. 8, 1944 - Feb. 2, 2023
WAUWATOSA - Nicholas C. Karegeannes, known for his loyal friendship and sense of humor, passed away on February 2, 2023. He was 79.
Nick, as he went by, was born to Constantine (Connie) and Ethel Karegeannes on January 8, 1944, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 25 years, Bessie Karegeannes.
He is survived by his sisters: Elena Campbell and Sue (Dennis) Stappas, and four children: Leah (John) Nosek, Deno (Colleen) Karegeannes, George (Amy) Karegeannes, and Amanda (Michael) Wolf.
As a dedicated and loving Papou, he is also survived by nine grandchildren: James, Patrick, Olivia (Marshall), Madeline, Sophia, Ella, Brecken, Sadler, and Delaney. He also was a devoted Godfather (Nouno) to Elainie Macias, John Andrekopoulos, Andrew Astin, Nicki Burris, Zach Anson, and George Andrekopoulos.
Nick graduated from Milwaukee's Custer High School, where he played baseball. He attended the University of Wisconsin on a baseball scholarship and briefly spent time in the Pittsburgh Pirates minor league system. He worked in the trophy business until his retirement. He always loved making and providing trophies for his grandchildren's sports teams.
He was a very proud Greek American and visited Greece twice in his lifetime. In addition to his general service at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, Nick served as a former president of the parish council - and was president at the time of the consecration of the church. Nick was honored to be the host for His Eminence Archbishop Iakovos of North and South America.
Nick co-chaired the church's Greek Festival with his close friend Jeff Kanavas for many years. His nickname was "Mr. Greek Fest" because he loved the festival so much. Furthermore, Nick and his wife, Bessie, served as advisors to the church's youth group for many years. They helped and inspired many of the parish's youth.
While in retirement, he was a beloved resident and assistant manager of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Manor, a place where his father, Connie, was also a beloved resident and manager. Nick was the "go-to guy" at the manor when anybody needed help or assistance.
Nick loved rooting for his favorite sports teams (Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Bucks, Milwaukee Brewers, Wisconsin Badgers), playing fantasy football, and most importantly, spending time with family and friends.
Special mention to all of his cousins, nieces, nephews, and other family and friends that he loved dearly.
The funeral service will be at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church on Friday, February 10, 9400 W. Congress St., Wauwatosa, WI 53225.
Visitation is 9-10:30 a.m., with the funeral service to follow; the private burial will be at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Milwaukee.
Donations can be made to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church.
May his memory be eternal.

To the Family of Nick Karegeannes;
I was sad to hear about the passing of Nick. He was a dear friend of my wife Gloria and I. Nick had a special relationship with so many people. He played a big role in the Annual Greek Festival for the Annunciation Church. My wife and Kelly Zach worked many years with him at the Fest. I know Nick will be missed by all who knew him. Rest Peacefully Nick.
With Sincere Sympathy,
Sue Stappas

To Leah, Deno, and George,
Your father's stories that he would share about the trips that they took with the youth groups inspired me to become involved with Sunday School, JOY, and GOYA. Those trips seemed to be so memorable to so many. Your father also inspired me with his involvement in the festival. I was very proud to know that my step brother helped create our festival.
To Amanda, I know you loved your "father of your heart", you didn't have the bloodline, but you experienced love and a fatherly role model. This is what I also found in my "father of my heart", your papou. May you realize I understand your loss for we have similar stories.
May my brother's memory be eternal.

To the extended Karegeannes family and everyone in the Annunciation Community,
We've all lost an incredible gem of a man in Nick; his presence in the formative years of many of us in the Annunciation Youth group was absolutely the difference maker in our development, growth, maturity and success. Nick was tireless in giving his time, energy, money and everything else he had -- including sharing his family -- to make us all feel warm, welcome and valued. He made those investments of time without ever asking for anything in return, which is a sign of true commitment.
Nick and Bessie, Kenny and Kelly, Nick and Min, Faye and Tom and many of the other adults who shepherded the youth group gave us their most valuable resource -- their time -- to shape our lives. At a time in our lives when we needed it most, Nick was like an older-brother-but-younger-dad to many of us and that attention and care meant the world. I, for one, will be eternally grateful for those gifts he gave me which I'd never be able to repay.
Some of my most enjoyable days were spent in a New Year's Day tradition where Teddy and I would go to the Karegeannes home and hang out for about 8 hours in the basement watching college football with Nick, Deno and George (with one TV stacked on top of the other so we could watch two games simultaneously.) The conversations during those games ranged from the mundane to the important and was always infused with a great deal of laughter and fun. Top it off with a couple of pizzas from Pepino's and it was easy to see why we kept that tradition up for many years.
I will always carry Nick's presence -- warm, funny, sarcastic, witty, happy -- with me through all my days. I consider myself one of the many people who were blessed by his presence in my life and, for that, I am eternally grateful. All love to Leah, Deno, George and their families.
Rest in Peace Niko and may his memory be eternal!
XOXOXOXO
Jeff
