RACINE - Thomas (Tom) Edward White Sr., 77, passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at the Wheaton Franciscan All Saints Hospital in Racine, WI. Tom was born on April 25, 1938 in Dawson, Georgia to the late Henry and Queen Victoria Hagan White. Tom’s list of accomplishments was matched only by his humility and sense of humor. Tom was drafted into the U.S. Army and served as a chef until honorably discharge. He completed his Bachelor’s Degree in 1965 at Fort Valley State College and became a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. He did further studies at the University of Wisconsin (Parkside and Milwaukee). Tom served as the President of the Wisconsin NAACP State Conferences of Branches for over 40 years, being elected every 2 years. He served three 4 year terms on the NAACP National Board of Directors, representing Region III of the association. During his years as State President, the WI Conference authored and published a state newsletter, which circulated throughout the association, and organized/hosted the first and most successful NAACP National Convention on record. He served on the board of directors for the Opportunity Industrialization Center (O.I.C); the Urban League of Racine/Kenosha, Inc.; the Racine Housing Authority, to name a few. Tom confessed Christ as his savior early in life, and was baptized for the remission of sins by the Macedonia Baptist Church in Parrott, GA, where he served as Superintendent of the Sunday School. In Racine, he united with the Second Missionary Baptist Church and served as Chairman of its Trustee Board. He was also a founder of the Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, Racine, WI, served as Deacon, Chairman of the Trustee Board, and Co-Chairman of the church board. Tom leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 39 years, Geraldine Edwards White, his son, Thomas E. White II, his two brothers, Lonzie L. (Sarah J.) White, Osie (Dr. Grace Turner) White, two sisters, Mary L. Blackshear and Louise W. Webb and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and mother: Henry and Queen V. In the loss of Thomas E White:

To: The White Family: Survivors:

You would know the secret of death.
But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life?
The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day
cannot unveil the mystery of light.

If you would indeed behold the spirit of death,
open your heart wide unto the body of life.
For life and death are one,
even as the river and the sea are one.
In the depth of your hopes and desires
lies your silent knowledge of the beyond;
And like the seeds dreaming beneath the snow
your heart dreams of spring.

Trust the dreams,
for in them is hidden the gate to eternity.
Your fear of death is but the trembling of the shepherd
when he stands before the king whose hand
is to be laid upon him in honour.

And what is it to cease breathing,
but to free the breath from its restless tides,
that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?
Only when you drink from the river of silence
shall you indeed sing.

And when you have reached the mountain top,
then you shall begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs,
then shall you truly dance.

Tom was a giant of a man, and is responsible for helping many over the years as President of the Wisconsin State NAACP for over 40 years: NAACP National Board Member for 12 years representing Region III and many young people through ACTSO, as well as other endeavors. Tom will be missed across the nation by many of us.... God Bless Rev. Richard P. and Brenda A. Burton

Had professional dealings with Tom over the years, and he was always great to deal with. He also took pictures of my young son on a school field trip at the zoo while there for other reasons, and sent me copies. Great guy. A gentle giant. Glad to have known him. Tom was the first Phi Beta Sigma brother that I met in Wisconsin after moving to the state from Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1968.We were both members of Second Missionary Baptist Church in Racine. Tom remained in Racine and I moved to Milwaukee in the early nineteen seventies. I will remember him as a friend and fraternity brother. He is now a member of the Omega chapter.

What can I write about a man that open so many doors for me and provide the exposure to avenues that I did not know possible. I came to Wisconsin just leaving college, living with my sister, no employment, but knew, there were more opportunities in Wisconsin than Tennessee. Through family, I was introduced to Tom White, he introduced me to many individuals he knew and open doors that I didn't know existed. He embraced me as a sister and saw too my wellbeing. Tom was kind, generous, loving, giving, always thinking of others. Thomas, and Geraldine today you are surrounded by people that their lives were impacted by Tom's life. The city of Racine, Wisconsin is on bending knee today, for they have lost a man that instilled the fair treatment of every citizen. Thomas, your Aunt Annie isn't with you in the flesh, but my heart is connected to you and Geraldine today.I once read an anonymous quote that sums my feelings, "Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal." Tom loved you Thomas and Geraldine. I Pray that God will comfort your heart, lift your spirit, and carry you during this time to a place of peace.

Compassion, dedication and energy were vital attributes of the gregarious Thomas White;no one put more effort and love into life's work than did Tom and the Civil Rights movement will sorely miss him. It has been many years since I last enjoyed the company of Tom but I will always remember how he brought people together and made large problems small by smiling, shaking hands and encouraging discussion, his favorite opening was,"Let's talk",and through his agreeable demeanor so much was accomplished.Peace and love to the family and friends of Tom White, keep smiling.
