Walter Stephen Goodland

RACINE - Walter Stephen Goodland has passed away on September 20, 2025. He was born in Racine, Wisconsin on November 4, 1938 to Walter S. Goodland and Ruth Westerfield Goodland. Upon graduating from Washington Park High School in 1957, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. His 20 year career choice led him down a wonderful life in aviation. While in the Army, he completed a one year tour of duty in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive. He was also privileged to be a Flight Engineer for two years with the Presidential Flight Detachment at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. He and his family spent three years in Bad Kreuznach, West Germany. Upon his retirement from three years at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, in 1980, Wally moved to New Iberia, Louisiana where he worked as a helicopter mechanic for Air Logistics. As the oilfield work diminished, he went to work for the Army Aviation Systems Command in St. Louis, Missouri and finished his aviation career as a Safety Inspector with the Federal Aviation Administration, finally retiring in 2003. He moved back home to Racine in 2021.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Susan Bertram Goodland; their three sons: Walter Scott (Renee Schlabach) Goodland, Matthew Goodland and Christopher (Rhonda) Goodland. Additional survivors include three grandchildren: Christopher Goodland, Michael Goodland, Beth (David) Crochet. Mr. Goodland also has four great-grandchildren: Jillian and Owen Crochet, Michael and Avery Goodland . He is also survived by his brothers, Jerry, Danny, and Jimmy Roushia; and sisters, Lila Strubing and Sandra Roushia and their spouses; sister-in-law, Betty (Raymond) Smith. Also surviving are many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Mr. Goodland was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Glen Jay Goodland; sister-in-law, Judy Behnke Goodland; his in-laws, James and Gladys Bertram; step-mother, Isabelle Pawzun Goodland; grandparents and great-grandparents, one of whom was former Governor of Wisconsin, Walter S. Goodland.
Services, including full military honors, will be held at Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home (4600 County Line Road, Mt. Pleasant, WI ) on Wednesday (TODAY), September 24, 2025 at 3:00 PM. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Wednesday (TODAY) from 2:00 – 3:00 PM. Private interment will take place in Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Thursday morning.
