Bhumibol Adulyadej Obituary
BANGKOK (AP) - King Bhumibol Adulyadej, revered in Thailand as a demigod, a humble father figure and an anchor of stability through decades of upheaval at home and abroad, died today. He was 88, and had been the world's longest reigning monarch.
The Royal Palace said Bhumibol died "in a peaceful state" at Siriraj Hospital, where he had been treated for various health problems for most of the past decade.
By the twilight of his rule, Bhumibol had become the world's richest monarch.

I work at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge and am proud to say we have a lovely display commemorating the birth of the king since he was born here. Many visitors stop to take pictures with his likeness and it is very humbling to know that he was such a revered and wonderful ruler in his country.

When I was working in Bangkok, His Majesty and I would often meet at our monthly amateur radio meetings. (He was an avid amateur radio operator - HS1A) A "down to earth" man, he was friendly, warm and showed none of the "royal trappings" and preferred NOT to be referred to by title, but simply by his given name. He was revered by his whole nation, even by those who disagreed with him. He will be sorely missed. My thoughts are with his wife
