Richard "Dickie" Marcoux

1942 - 2016

BIDDEFORD-Richard "Dickie" Bruno Marcoux, 74, of Biddeford, died peacefully on Friday, Nov. 18, 2016, following a short stay at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, and after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He was born to Amedee Marcoux and Delina (Roy) Marcoux on March 11, 1942, in Biddeford, one of 11 children.

He was married to Marguerite (Peggy) Mailhot Marcoux from 1966 to 2015, and together they raised two sons.

He started working at an early age, working on Gonneville Farm as a teenager. He worked a variety of delivery jobs, including beer and milk for Paul Lambert. After some time working in the Pepperell Mills and at the Saco Tannery, he began a long truck driving career. He made deliveries and pickups for the tannery all over New England's network of old mill towns. Even in later years, he still knew the roads like the back of his hand, giving his sons a guided tour during a drive to Connecticut to visit family.

Eventually, Richard landed at Dayton Sand and Gravel in Lyman, driving a concrete mixer for 23 years until his retirement. He was rightfully proud of the many times he was requested specifically by contractors for his work ethic, his driving skills, and his sense of humor. Throughout his career, he was rarely sick, almost never missing a day of work. More than most people, he enjoyed mowing his lawn. He was very proud to have owned and maintained the home where his family lived for so long.

In his youth, Richard was very athletic. He spent much of his winters speed skating at West Brook Skate Rink on Pool Street in Biddeford. His sons fondly recall discovering how unexpectedly graceful he was on the ice! In the summers, at a family camp on Little Ossipee Pond, he and his brothers would entertain their families for hours, showing off while water-skiing.

In the years leading up to his retirement, Richard finally began to travel for leisure instead of just work, and enjoyed long weekends in places like Niagara Falls, Cape Cod, and Quebec. He was especially fond of a group tour in Italy several years ago that he still raved about in his last days.

More recently, Richard enjoyed attending church regularly and always looked forward to his weekly breakfast outing with his buddies. He made friends wherever he went, striking up teasing banter with everyone along the way. His laughter and smile are what family and friends will remember best about him.

Richard's greatest accomplishment, aside from being a dedicated provider for his family, was achieving sobriety in 1992. He never suffered a relapse, something for which we are all very proud.

He was preceded in death by: his parents: his sisters, Rita, Lucille, and Irene; and by his brothers, Eddie, Robert, and Roger.

He is survived by: his sister, Rachel; his brothers, Raymond, Donald, and Roland (Joe); his son, Patrick and daughter-in-law, Diane; son, Scott; grandchildren, Samantha, Anthony, Alicia, Christopher (CJ) and Eric; several cousins, nephews, and nieces, particularly his late sister Lucille's daughter, Jacqueline, who has done so very much for him in recent years.

Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, 2016, at Cote Funeral Home Chapel, 87 James St., Saco. Burial will be private at a later date.
