Ashok Kumar Obituary

Dr. Ashok K. V. Kumar, M.D.

Milwaukee - Dr. Ashok Kumar passed away in his home on May 13, 2021 at the age of 73. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sadhana, who passed away 3 years ago at the age of 70. Dr. Kumar was born in Mysore, India in 1948 and graduated from Mysore Medical College in 1970. He emigrated to the US in 1971, and after completing his general and vascular surgery training, established his practice in Milwaukee, where he served the community for over 40 years until retiring in 2018. He was talented, committed to his profession, and his vascular surgery skills were admired by his peers and patients alike. Dr. Kumar married Sadhana in 1976 and raised two beautiful children, Maya and Justin. Through later years, Dr. Kumar brought the same passion and commitment in caring for his wife, who battled stroke and stroke-related complications. Dr. Kumar was the first of his family to emigrate to the US, and he paved the way for his siblings to settle in the Midwest.

During his professional career, Dr. Kumar served as Chief of Staff of St. Francis Hospital and as President of the Wisconsin Chapter of the American Cancer Society. Beyond medicine, he had a zeal for education, serving as a Trustee for University School of Milwaukee for 7 years. In his free time Dr. Kumar enjoyed playing tennis and golf, along with spirited card games with both family and friends. He was an enthusiastic scholar who enjoyed reading biographies, history, and classical literature. He was a thoroughbred horse racing enthusiast, attending several Kentucky Derby and Breeders Cup events and serving as a valued member of the Arlington International Racecourse Turf Club.

Dr. Kumar is survived by his son Justin J. Kumar, his daughter Maya Kumar (Scott Cockerham), and three doting grandchildren: Lily, Bodhi, and Abigail Cockerham. He is also survived by his four siblings and their families: his brother K. V. K. Swamy (Jacqueline Swamy) and nephew Sebastian Swamy; his sister Uma Anand (Vivek Anand), niece Dr. Chytra Anand (Ajay Karbanda) and son Arin Karbanda, and nephew Vyshakh Anand (Sheelaa Bajaj) and sons Shean and Zubbin Bajaj; his brother Dr. Gregory V. Warren (Dr. Shobha Warren) and nephews Joshua, Neil, and Ethan Warren; and his sister Mythily Khosla (Lalit Khosla) and niece Dr. Monica Rani (David Ofori-Amoah).

A memorial service to honor Dr. Kumar's life will be held on Saturday, May 22, 2021 from 4-7 pm CDT at Westmoor Country Club Grill Room and Trophy Room 400 S. Moorland Rd, Brookfield, WI 53005. I knew Dr. Kumar for 46 years and his untimely death left me saddened beyond words. I met him first as a surgical resident. Then he became my chief resident and later, he very generously invited me to join his well-established surgical practice. I learned much from Ashok in the operating room and out; he was a master of his craft. He performed thousands of "precise and demanding surgeries."

He was a great influence on my professional career; his friendship and support meant the world to me. Ashok approached work and life with great dedication and infinite inner strength. His care of Sadhana was a true love story, and he said many times to me that he couldn't think of doing it any other way. He lived out his wedding vows in the most profound and loving way.

He extended his caring spirit and love and kindness to all who knew him: patients, friends and most especially, his family. Rest in peace, my friend.

Dearest Justin and Maya: My heart is filled with sadness over the news of your fathers passing. All of my memories of both of your parents are filled with joy, laughter and overwhelming love which they showered on both of you as well as their close friends which we were fortunate to have been a part of. Your fathers contribution to life was immense and will be felt forever. Few people walk the earth and touch as many lives as he has in so many ways. I can see his smile, hear he laugh and remember many of the fancy bow ties he wore. There will never be another like him. Ashok was truly one of a kind, and will be greatly missed. Love to the entire family, from the Qureshi family.
