Brian Akers Obituary

Akers, Brian Paul Brian Akers, age 64, died suddenly March 2, 2013, leaving behind his bereft wife of 20 years, Susan, best beloved golden retriever, Jupiter, and tolerably liked beagle, Matilda. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Brian was the only child of Paul and Alice Akers. After attending Kenyon College and Tufts Medical School, Brian established a two man medical practice in western Massachusetts. In his early 40s, Brian graduated from Stanford Law School and practiced patent litigation with Foley & Lardner from 1991 (where he met Susan) until retirement in 2009. For more than 20 years Brian was a volunteer teacher in the bioethics program at Medical College of Wisconsin. He took on additional teaching and lecturing opportunities in retirement. Unpretentious, occasionally irreverent, Brian lived a life of integrity and brought an intellectual rigor and humor to every endeavor. He held--and expressed--strong opinions. He loved being quantitative. Brian and Susan's laughter, wordplay and debate earned them the nickname "the happy couple" at several local establishments. Brian battled bladder cancer successfully 2 years ago partly because, as he put it, he feared being placed in the "placebo hospice" group if he worsened. Brian enjoyed aviation (instrument rated private pilot), atheism, bacon, bird watching, cold beer, music, drumming, calligraphy, caricature, cooking, the Packers, hiking and golfing with Susan, driving his Miata and reading history, biography, philosophy, poetry, ethics and jazz. Brian took up golf in recent years, memorized the rule book, and played not so good with an almost Sisyphean avidity. He personally explored every nuance of various out-of-bound rules situations and kept scrupulous score. Brian's greatest gifts to Susan were his boundless love, loyalty and support; ability to find and share humor in every nook and cranny of life; and his steadfast companionship. Brian is also survived by his mother, eight nieces and nephews, his wonderful Slovenian cousins, too many LaBuddes to count, and many dear friends. Special thanks to Drs. Betz and Gee for their care. Memorial tributes to the American Heart Association, any bladder cancer research group or Golden Retriever Rescue of Wisconsin. Memorial service at a later date.

Susan, Rachel and myself are shocked and saddened at Brian's sudden passing. Rachel knew him from her time at Froedtert and I knew him through Dr Derse and his bioethics talks as well as the Golden Retiever Rescue- I volunteer up at Washington County Humane as an IT Guy since 2001.

Susan and Aunt Alice, I just can't imagine your grief at this time. Brian
was such a great guy. I enjoyed being his cousin all these years. I still remember Brian and the other cousins being in the boat on the pond when it started filling up with water. I think Brian managed to bail the most water out. We will miss him dearly.

Dear Susan, We can't believe that Brian has passed on. I am so glad we were able to get together in 2011 to see you both, as well as Aunt Alice. Brian was a unique individual, and a great croquet player at our family picnics in Ohio.

Susan, we're very sad we didn't get to know Brian in the short time we've lived in the neighborhood. After reading your beautiful memorial, we're sure the 4 of us would have had a ball. Let us know if you need anything.

Susan: I am deeply saddened and shocked. Brian was one of the kindest and warmest persons I have ever known. His sense of humor and smile lit up whatever room he was in. We will all miss him dearly. May your memories of him help you through this difficult time.

Susan, please accept my sympathies on your loss of Brian. I very much enjoyed working with him, but even more I love laughing with him -- which we did fairly often (at least by law firm standards). I really appreciated how much he loved to share his experience and wisdom in the training of junior lawyers. What a special guy he was. I am grateful for the chance to know him.

Oh, Susan, my heart is breaking for you. "Perhaps they are not the stars, but rather openings in the heavens where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy."

Though I only met Brian once--at Beans--your words and stories made him sing, smile, and snark, while giving him line, shape and color. I knew I would love him too.
