Bruce Howard Ambuel

1952 - 2018

Ambuel, Bruce Howard Bruce Howard Ambuel died on January 10, 2018 from glioblastoma brain cancer at the age of 65. He was the beloved husband of Helen Barker Ambuel and the proud father of Laura Louise Flanagan (Francis Xavier Flanagan) of Winston-Salem NC, Brian Philip Ambuel (Anna Rose Brown) of Minneapolis MN, and David Hartley Ambuel (Zina Gabrielle Noel) of Minneapolis MN. He was the devoted grandfather of Liam, Jamie, and Reid Flanagan. Bruce was born June 19, 1952, the second of three sons of Marion Stork and John Philip Ambuel. His brothers are Jack Robert Ambuel (Yuping) of Madison WI and David Kent Ambuel (Patinya) of Falls Church VA. Bruce grew up in Columbus OH and graduated from Upper Arlington High School in 1970. He earned a BA in Biology from Carleton College in 1976, a Masters in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1981, and a PhD in Clinical and Community Psychology from the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign in 1989. Bruce was the Director of Behavioral Science Education at the Waukesha Family Medicine Residency of the Medical College of Wisconsin from 1990-2012. He served on the Board of the Waukesha County Community Clinic and in many other leadership roles. After retirement Bruce worked as a documentary and fine arts photographer. Through his photography, Bruce moved himself and his audience beyond expectation toward curiosity and openness. Bruce was engaged in and committed to his community. He was generous in thought and action to improve the world. He will be remembered for his gentle, thoughtful, curious, and steadfast nature. His love endures. A memorial service will be at 10:30am on February 10, 2018 at Unitarian Universalist Church West, 13001 W North Ave, Brookfield WI 53005.
