Carl Peter Obituary

Peter, Carl Wehr Sr. Passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at the age of 84. He lives now Eternally in the truth and blessed redemption provided freely by his savior Jesus Christ. Carl was born in Milwaukee on October 17, 1929 the second child of Frederick T. Peter and Virginia Wehr Peter. For the past 25 years he shared time between homes in Elm Grove, WI and Palm City, FL. He was raised in Wauwatosa attending Wauwatosa High School and later attended Northwestern University and University of Wisconsin where he received his degree in Engineering. He was also a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. Carl's best professional talent was sales. He held several successful sales positions before becoming Vice President of Sales for JAX INC. (formerly Behnke Lubricants, Inc.). In 1963 Carl acquired the company and ran it successfully for over 25 years. He will be missed by his many friends at JAX whom he worked with cherished for years. Carl met his wife to be, Janet Zurheide of Milwaukee, at a Young Republicans meeting in 1953. They were married in August of 1954. Several years later they moved with their sons Eric and Carl Jr. to a five acre hill top home they named Schön Hügel, surrounded by a dairy farm, two miles west of Waukesha. While in Waukesha their daughter Heidi was born. Carl subsequently lived in Elm Grove and Wauwatosa. Carl was a great father, and a grand and gracious host enjoying his children's company along with all of their friends. Many warm memories are still recalled of fun around his home in the Washington Highlands or trips to his beach house in Grand Cayman. He was a third generation member of the Wisconsin Club and will be missed by his friends there. Carl enjoyed cars, gardening, golf and traveling. Each of his homes featured spectacular gardens, the result of many hours of pruning and weeding. He shared his beautiful cars for weddings and proms for family and friends. He made lifelong friends wherever he traveled, in particular with his Norwegian family the Bergels. He enjoyed the social side of golf and had many good memories of times spent playing the game. Carl was a Grand Master Mason with over 55 years of membership. He was active with Elmbrook Lodge, the Jesters, El Hajj, the Scottish Rite and the Shriners for years. Carl is survived by his children Heidi (Scott) Ball of Wauwatosa, Dr. Carl W. (Michelle) Peter M.D. of Columbia, SC and Eric J. (Gina) Peter of Elm Grove and his sister-in-law Pat (Warren) Peter of St. Louis, MO. He was a good friend and will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Kyle and Kurt Peter, Lukas and Samantha Ball, and Tori, Carl III (Trey), Michael and Sarah Peter. He was a dear cousin, uncle and friend to many others who will also miss him greatly. Years ago I had the pleasure of working for Eric J Peter, actually 10 years!
Carl was a everyday presence, Carl would light up a room with his smiles and stories, when I would scold him for smoking, he would laugh and just say don't tell anyone, it's our secret.
(I'm sure many knew "our secret").. Over the years I have thought of Janet(a true angel) and Carl often.I was blessed to have the pleasure of knowing them. My condolences to Eric and his family. Carl was truly a sweetheart!

I met Carl this past Fall when the Peter Cup was being contested. He and I shared lunch together at Westmoor between the morning and afternoon competitions. It was a very light-hearted discussion and he shared with me a little background information about the Cup and the how the competition began. The encounter reminded me quite a bit of the conversations I used to have with my grandfather. He was a great conversationlist, sharp dresser and obviously a very competitive individual. Let's just say it was my honor to have had the opportunity to spend some one on one time with Carl.

My condolences to family and friends,

Paul Bryant

Whenever I think of Carl, it always makes me smile. He was truly a "one of kind" type of guy. He was always quick witted, entertaining, opinionated and still caring. His love of family, cars, gardening and his entrepreneurial drive both inspired and influenced me. I'm sorry that we are out of town and not able to share in the celebration of his life with you. May his love and fond memories ease your grief. With sympathy, Brian & Nancy

I have so many fond memories of my Uncle Carl. One that always makes me smile is singing and dancing to obladi oblada when I was very young at the Highlands home. So silly and simple but such fun. Uncle Carl always knew how to make people smile. I hope that your memories of him will make you smile often.

I knew Carl when he was a teen. He lived in an apartment in the barn with his brother, before his father(Fred) sold the farm to the Westmoor Country Club. I know Carl got his love of cars from his father. One time Fred came into our filling station with a Citroen that had air shocks. While raising it up on the lift, the air shocks deflated and the car dropped a bit, scaring everyone but providing lots of laughs. Carl (And his entire family) was a real class act that I was privileged to know. We all pass along our sincerest condolences.

Carl was always the gentleman, and always with a great joke. His presence was a bright light at the Evergreen Club and he will be missed but always fondly remembered.
