David Brierton Obituary

Brierton, David L. David Brierton was a successful businessman and a dedicated family man. Brierton founded Dominium, the upper Midwest's largest affordable housing company. Brierton was passionate about affordable housing and to date Dominium has helped more than 70,000 low-to-moderate income people in 20 states across the United States. The 70-year-old passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on September 27, 2012. Brierton grew up in Waukesha, Wis. He attended Catholic Memorial High School and upon graduation enlisted in the Air Force where he spent more than 3 years. Following his military term, David received his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin, and a master of business Administration (MBA) degree from the Graduate School of Business at the University of Wisconsin. Upon graduation, he was awarded a graduate study fellowship by the Department of Housing and Urban Development of Washington, D.C. While in school, David was a recipient of the Wall Street Journal Outstanding Student Achievement Award, presented annually by the Dow Jones Company. In 1970, David was hired by Gene B. Glick Company, the largest subsidized housing developer in the country. In 1972, he started Dominium, now the eighth largest affordable housing development company in the country. Shortly after, he was joined by Jack Safar. David believed in deferring personal enrichment to grow the company. He provided great support to employees and helped them further their professional goals. In 2012, Dominium is celebrating 40 years of business and it is because of the great foundation laid by David and Jack. David had a deep commitment to helping people in need. While at Dominium, he helped numerous individuals and families in financial need. David was responsible for the renovation of the Blatz Brewery in Milwaukee into luxury apartments David was passionate about housing and served on the boards of the National Leased Housing Association and Minnesota Multi-Housing Association. In his spare time, David was an avid golfer. My condolences go out to the Brierton and Dominium families. Having worked almost 14 years for David he certainly cared deeply for his employees and the affordable housing industry, not to say he couldn't be impatient and constructively honest with you at times. David was a wonderful man, great leader, and a tremendous loss. I will cherish the opportunity to have worked for him always.
