David Haskell Obituary

Haskell, David S. Dr. Haskell, surrounded by his family, died peacefully in his home on July 6 2018. He was 76. A family man above all, dear friend to many, physician, professor in orthopedic surgery, student of life, and philanthropist, David is remembered for his relentless passion to improve the wellbeing of others. He changed countless lives and left the world a better place. He is survived by his wife of over 52 years Suzanne (Torcivia), daughter Amy (Ray) Lucchesi and son David (Jen) Haskell; three grandchildren Mia Bella Lucchesi, Sarah Haskell and Katie Haskell; siblings Jeffrey (Julie) Haskell and Maureen Haskell; niece Brook Reise and nephew Kurt (Ansley) Reise. He is preceded in death by his sister Kathleen Haskell Scherer. David Haskell was born in East Troy, Wisconsin. Having earned a B.S. with honors from Marquette University and a MD with honors from the Medical College of Wisconsin, Dr. Haskell entered private practice specializing in orthopedic surgery. He also served in the Army National Guard Reserve as a young man. Blessed with a big heart and substantial intellect, he advanced the scientific gains of orthopedics through 46 years of practice and sharing of knowledge via publications, lectures, teaching, college faculty appointments, hospital committees, and professional societies. He was named team physician for the Milwaukee Bucks in 1974 and was honored to have served in that capacity for over 30 years. An advocate of education and opportunity for others, David generously endowed a Chair in Orthopedic Education at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Memorials in David's memory may be given to the David S. Haskell, MD Endowed Chair, or the David S. Haskell, MD Scholarship fund sponsored by Dr. Thomas and Susan Kempken (both c/o Medical College of Wisconsin, Attention Office of Development, 8701 Watertown Plank Rd., Milwaukee, WI 53226) The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 12, 2018 at 3:00 at St. Mary Visitation Parish, Elm Grove (1260 Church St.). I remember my Dad telling me the story of him Golfing with Doctor Haskell and the Bucks calling Doctor Haskell off the course to take a call to double check if Moncrief’s knees were alright enough to draft him. Also remember when I would ask Doctor Haskell how he was doing Doctor Haskell would answer “ Am alright am staying off the streets”

I still think of you even years later. Teaching me about stocks, telling me about your time with the Milwaukee Bucks and just being a motivator will never be forgotten. I appreciate the time on earth I had to meet you and your family. I was able to speak with Maureen a few times after your passing and praying everyone is doing well.

I still think of him often. It was also good to see his sidekick Betsy at the clinic down the street. Every time I go down Mayfair Rd I find myself looking up to the third floor. It was always great to see him no matter what the ailment ( and there were plenty). One funny thing I remember after countless elbow shoulder shots surgeries, I had a sore foot he said, "Finally a below the waist injury." We both had a good laugh. I'll miss being greeted by a "Scotty" and firm handshake.

A fine, loyal and very competent gentleman and doctor who also happens to be a great golfer (by my standards!). Always returned my calls even when on the links; very generous and warm hearted even to Venus whom he hardly knew esp when at the Dalum's for our reunions. Also has a great and spirited vocabulary! Always there when you need him but still owes me that "dinner" he talked about on many occasions. He will always be a role model for me and many others I suspect. I and Venus will always remember him in the finest of class and tradition. Kindest regards to his wife who was lucky enough to have lived with and loved him.

I just learned of Dr. Haskell's passing this last weekend. I had been a patient of his for many years. a number of elbow and shoulder surgeries. He had such a great sense of humor and his laugh was loud and real. He helped me do the activities I wanted to keep doing many times over. He insisted on seeing my brother who had an elbow injury, but not insurance for no charge. Even though I only saw him in his office and the hospital, I feel very sad I will not see him again in this world.

July 30, 2018

I just found out this past weekend that Dr. Haskell passed. It felt like I lost an Uncle. I was a re-occurring patient of his for many years. He helped me so much physically. I saw him enough to consider him a friend. He had such a bedside manor and his laugh was so hearty. I discussed a relative with him one time that had an injury, but no insurance. He insisted I bring him in at no charge. I will miss him.

I just found out that the Wonderful Dr Haskell is now an Angel in Heaven. As he was on Earth. I worked at BlueMound CC and It was truly an honor to have been able to serve the Haskells
I was also blessed to have worked in his home.

He was one of the most generous and gracious people I have ever met.

I am sure he would of hoped that everyone would celebrate his entrance to heaven.

My wife and I were patients of Dr. Haskell for many years. Through knee, shoulder, hand and foot surgeries we always found him to be patient and caring. He even did an exam for our unemployed son pro bono which was greatly appreciated. He always went the extra mile and will be missed so much.

I had the pleasure to have David perform 2 reconstructive surgeries the first in the 80's he constructed new ligaments in my ankle he indicated it should be 90-95% effective, but today at age 65 I say it was 110% effective. My second sports related injury occurred in the 90's he had the greatest bedside manner and personality - I hadn't seen him in over 10 years when he entered the room he stated Jimmy Tostrud I thought I retired you! My sincere condolences to those that loved him, he was the greatest!

Dr. Haskell is greatly missed at the OR at Elmbrook Hospital. He was always so generous to the staff, contributing to parties and buying his team for the day lunch in the cafeteria "nothing expensive though". I will miss meeting him in the halls, always had a fist bump or funny comment to make, always bringing a smile to your face no matter what was going on. I am not sure if he even knew my name, but he made me feel like a friend of his, such a blessing to have a gift like that. I always felt he had such a life of happiness and he wanted to spread it to others, and I wanted his family and friends to know that.

Although Dave and I lived far apart geographically, he always remained a true and loyal friend and fellow "man for others" alumnus of MUHS. We would meet up either at his home or at a MUHS alumni "reunion" party (at the Dalums' estate), and he was always in good humor and very gracious to Venus and I - consistently for many, many years. I was honored to be able to photograph his home (a la ...www.architectinteriorsphotothk.com as well as for his support for my on again and off again trumpet music! Venus always had a fond remembrance of Dave because of his outward kindness toward her at the MUHS reunions and at his home. He is one of the very few people that also reliably returned his phone calls regardless of where he was - even in the middle of his golf game! God rest his beautiful soul and hope we can meet up again in a timely manner in our next life - to include more of his "one liners"!!

Regards to his wife and family who will always have an important role model to follow and emulate throughout their missions on this planet.

My condolences to Dr. Haskell's family. He was a class act. I remember how patient and kind he was with my grandma as her physician in the 1970s/80s and how he exemplified the same manner with my dad in the last few years. Such a wonderful man. My thoughts and prayers to you all.

I knew Dr. Haskell as a young girl when My sister Sally & I used to babysit for his children Amy & David in Elm Grove - he was a life force to me as he'd drive me and my sister home the block & a half it took to go in his electric blue jag & he'd tell us stories about the Milwaukee Bucks he was taking care of ( of course, not by name). He was so handsome & gregarious & funny. We loved him & his tiny little Italian wife Suzanne. Only later when I attended DSHA did I learn he was the older brother of a classmate and now long lost friend Maureen Haskell. Such a small world we live in - cherish it - every day! Every time I see a Jag, David, I will ALWAYS think of you - hope you're enjoying you're heavenly ride now! Mary McGinn Alderson

Our condolences to the entire Haskell family. Dr. Haskell was our family's orthopedic surgeon for the past 25 years. He was a true professional but just as importantly he was a friend who always took time to ask about the family, work and mutual friends. He wil be missed by our family as well as a multitude of other families.

Am so sorry to hear this. Thoughts and prayers are with and for, you and your family. Dr. Haskell cured my knee on at least a couple occasions. Dr Haskell greatly improved my knee and well being with surgery and shots. He had a great sense of humor and was very friendly when I would see him at parades, country clubs and everywhere. I will miss him.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Haskell and working with him for 20+ years. I can honestly say I believe he lived life to the fullest and practiced what he preached. "Don't leave all your time outs 'til the 4th quarter." He was loved and respected, and when you'd ask him "how are you" he would inevitably reply "darn near perfect, you?"
Thank you to his family for sharing him with us all these years, and still finding the proverbial "whiskey cork and bottle caps" in all those knees!
We were blessed to know him.

I did not know David professionally, but he was a "professional" bidder at Junior Achievement Auctions over the years. He was a real rascal - pushing up the bids and then suddenly stopping and smiling as other bidders (me included) walked away with an outrageously priced item. Expensive for me - Good for JA -Fun for David. What a guy!

I was a year behind David in my residency. He was one of my mentors who taught me a great deal of Orthopaedics but more about life. We would see each other at meetings and he would always include Donna and I at his table of honor. They say a great person is someone who reminds us of no one else. David sure fit that description. David your memories live inside us and you will always be remembered. Bill and Donna Curran

I was so saddened to hear of Dr Haskells passing. He was a great physician with the ability to make the uncomfortable procedure a light hearted one. He had a great sense of humor and unequaled ability with a needle. My deepest sympathies to his family and his great staff, Betsy and Lauren. He will be deeply missed.

Dr. Haskell has been such an inspiration to us through all of the years we've known him.
He was always such a good friend to his family and friends, and to anyone lucky enough to have worked with him.
He lived life on his own terms and will be very greatly missed.
We are fortunate to have spent many happy times with him.

Dr. Haskell - we loved having you in our lives.
