Duane Cherek Obituary

Cherek, Duane "Dewey" Born May 16, 1943, to the late Theodore and the late Jean (nee Wesolowski) Cherek, and passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after a long illness. Cherished husband of Nannette (nee Gardetto). Beloved father of Lisa (Jim Rybacki) Cherek, Laura (Rich Laabs) Cherek and Kristine (Kirk Larsen) Cherek. Proud grandfather of Alex, Amanda, Emma and Elizabeth. Brother of Dennis and Ken Cherek. Loving son-in-law of Judy and the late John Gardetto. Also survived by nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law, other relatives and many dear friends. Dewey was born and grew up in Bay View, Wisconsin. He attended Bay View High School prior to enlisting in the Army. He spent his entire career in the automobile industry, working first for Firestone Tire Company and Doucas Oldsmobile before starting his own auto dealership in 1984. Next to spending time with his family and friends, Dewey's third true love was cars and Cherek Lincoln Mercury. He touched the lives of so many people through his business. Dewey always considered it a privilege to take care of his customers and his employee family. Nothing made him happier than knowing everyone felt well taken care of. The family would like to give special thanks for the compassionate care given to Dewey over the years by the nurses and aides on 12ST (Oncology) and the many care providers who showed such kindness in the various departments at St. Luke's Medical Center, Dr. Robert Taylor and his staff at Oncology Alliance for their years of care and friendship, and Dr. Ralph Fairchild for his kindness, friendship and support. A special heartfelt thank you to Dr. Brian Buggy. It's hard to find the words to express our gratitude for the extraordinary support, willingness to "quarterback", friendship and loving compassionate care. It brought such comfort during the most difficult times. Dewey was the owner/operator of Cherek Lincoln Mercury, member of Brew Town Cruiser Car Club, past member of South Shore Yacht Club, board member of Lincoln Savings and Loan, Lincoln State Bank, Merchants and Manufacturers Bancorp, and also member of the IMPS, ADAMM and the Wisconsin Club. Visitation on Thursday, August 13, 2009, from 3 PM to 5:45PM, at GESU CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1145 W. Wisconsin Avenue, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 6PM. Private entombment at St. Adalbert Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Wisconsin Blood Center, St. Ann's Center or the Gesu Parish Organ Renovation Project would be very appreciated. Dewey
For me there was no one like you in the entire world. When I was as far down as anyone could ever get. You were always there for me. You just were always a class act. You and I sure had some good times. I still have lunch with my employee's, keep my shoes polished, never park the car with the wipers up. No one could ever scold me like you did. I never learned more about life and just being a man like I did from you. Monday nights out, going to the airport for a shine, even just sitting at the yacht club. It was always entertaining, informative, and just a good time being around you. I always looked up and respected you because you earned it all those years ago when we met at the Oldsmobile store. You always treated me fairly. It was always a pleasure to do business with you. I will miss you very much. You were right Dewey, " Words Are Very Important". I am sure you are now with Ted. I loved you Dewey. Thank you for everything.

Dearest Nan and your family,
I just learned of your loss and I am so very, very sorry. This is such a difficult journey...to lose one whom you loved so deeply. While I never met Dewey myself, reading what others have written here,I certainly wish I had. Now I understand why you loved each other so much...two beautiful souls joined in a sacred marriage.

Call me if you would ever like to talk...I am here for you always...with lots of love, Nan2

Just found out about Dewey this morning, from my son Bill. My wife, Celia and I, are so sorry to hear of his passing. We were just talking about him within the past month. I worked for him in the 1970's and 1980s. He was a great guy, and a great boss.

So sad the hear this news. I remember seeing Mr Cherek at car shows and other events, especially at Jetz in Muskego on Thursday night. My fondest memory would be him helping me find a side mirror for my old Mercury Marquis wagon, even though I had never bought an automobile from his dealership. Awesome gentleman! He will be missed.

I only had a short time to get to know Dewey and Nan while he was here at St. Lukes on 3 North. During that time I got to see what an interesting and strong man he was and how funny! He was a wonderful patient to work with and only wish I could have spent more time with him and even known him outside the hospital setting. It's a comfort to know that he is resting in peace.

It was Dewey who called my radio show one afternoon decades ago to ask what my wife and I were doing that night? I asked why? He said he just learned of a person in Cudahy that was demo'in this thing called the "Singing Machine". I asked what it was? Dewey said he had no idea, but he thought of me that instant and had to call. That "thing" became the Steve York StarMaker Show, that started in Milwaukee, and moved on to San Fransisco, and around the world. thx dew,i love you.....

Laura, Rich, Alex, Amanda, Lisa & family, Kristine & family, Nan, & Donna, I have really good memories of Dewey. Growing up, riding in his really nice, cushy cars with the gorgeous sound systems. "She's got Bette Davis Eyes" always has and always will make me think of him. Most recently going to the Milwaukee Art Museum to the Chihuly glass exhibit. That was so nice of him. He was a classy guy. I am so sorry for your loss.

having faced the beast called cancer,
and having stood at the abyss,
I think I know some of the answer,
so let me tell you this.
keep your words honest and tender
never taunt or make an irrevocable threat
it's not lifes pain that we remember
or the fights we've lost that we regret.
it's the love we didn't surrender
and the hugs we didn;t get.your kind words
and acts will be cherished
your sense of humor will be missed
and though you may have perished
in our hearts, your spirit will always exist.
