Gerald Colburn Obituary

Colburn, Gerald S. Of Milwaukee. Passed away on September 28, 2014, at the age of 97. Beloved husband of the late Alice (nee Cohen). Loving father of Sue L. (Robert) Colburn Strauss, Bruce B. (Josephine) Colburn and David M. (Kathleen) Colburn. Cherished grandfather of Rachel, Jessica, Jacob, Jonathan (Justine), and Jason Colburn and Marcus Davis Colburn; step-grandfather of David Strauss and Jennifer (Daniel) Doerfler. Dear great-grandfather of Joshua and Jillian Colburn; step-great-grandfather of Alexander "Alex" and Rachel Doerfler; Eliana, Isabelle and Ava Strauss. Fond brother of Shirley (the late Benn) Ollman, Ruth (the late William) Peterman and the late Sylvia (the late Albert) Kramer. Further survived by other loving relatives and dear friends. Gerald served his country in WWII. He received a Field Commission and was decorated with a Bronze Star. He was the founder and owner of Jak-Pak Inc., a successful toy company. He was dedicated to the State of Israel and served in many capacities on a local, state, and national level. He served as the national campaign chairman of the United Jewish Appeal and also headed several Israel Bond drives. He was involved in local politics including serving as a Eugene McCarthy delegate for the 1968 Democratic convention. Graveside service to be held on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 2:30 PM at Anshai Lebowitz Cemetery, 326 S. Hawley Rd., Milwaukee. Memorial contributions made to the Alice and Gerald S. Colburn Scholarship Fund, c/o Jewish Community Foundation, 1360 N. Prospect Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53202 would be appreciated. I am very sorry to hear of Gerry's passing. I worked with the family on a video and written history in 2003-2004. It was delightful interviewing Gerry in his home, working on the project, and getting to know your family second-hand. He was a good man and signifies a life well lived.
