Gordon Mortensen Obituary

Mortensen, Gordon E.

Gordon E. Mortensen, age 75, died on Tuesday, February 11, at ClareBridge Assisted Living in Sun Prairie, WI. He was born on October 12, 1938, to Gordon and Hannah Mortensen in Neenah, WI; he will be greatly missed by Sally, his wife of 30 years.

Gordon graduated with a BA in history from St. Olaf College, and went on to achieve his MA and PhD. He retired as a major in the U.S. Air Force.

Most of Gordon's career was spent in education, where he not only taught social studies but also spent the majority of his career as an administrator. He served as principal and superintendent for many Wisconsin school districts, and was an ad hoc professor, supervising student teachers.

Gordon enjoyed all sports, playing football, basketball and tennis in high school, and was on the tennis team both at St. Olaf and with the military. He attended many Badger and Packer games, and really was at the Ice Bowl!

His great joy was being a member of the Riverside Players in Neenah, where he had the lead in many plays.

Gordon is survived by his wife Sally of Sun Prairie, WI; a sister, Gloria Knutson (Gerhard) of Northfield, MN; daughters, Michelle Winter (John) of Appleton; Cheri Buelow (Jeff) of Hudson; Kristin Coopman (Doug) of Neenah; and a son, Mike Mortensen (Traci) of Brookfield; two stepchildren, Elizabeth Albota (Marius) of Maynard, MA; and Andrew McIntosh (Rebecca) of WinterPark, FL. Gordon has ten grandchildren, Mark, Sam, Grace, Mikalah, Makenzie, Mariah, Parker John, Lucy, Lucian and Mirabela.

A memorial service will be held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Sun Prairie, with visitation at noon and service at 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 20. Celebration to follow at Crown Point Condominium, Liberty Blvd, Sun Prairie.

Thank you to all the wonderful caregivers at ClareBridge Assisted Living.

We recently learned of Gordy's passing. I began my teaching career at Maplewood Jr. High where Gordy was principal
and had all four of his children in my sixth grade classroom.
My sympathy goes out to the family.

So very sorry to hear of the passing of an old buddy. I didn't realize Gordy and I were 4 days apart in age---me first of course. He'd love that.
I'll always remember playing "buckets" at Marv's house and the "war evening" with the lights out and the only warning you had of invasion were the beer bottles being knocked over. You had to be there I guess. Some of you will remember. What? You mean freshmen weren't allowed to drink? Surely you jest.

On behalf of Riverside Players "Theatre in the Park", please accept my sympathy for your loss. I didn't know Gordon, when he was an active member of Riverside Players. However, I did have the pleasure of meeting him and chatting with him at the 50th Anniversary celebration in 2006. Thank you for sharing him with the Neenah Theatre Community.

With Warm Regards,
Laurie Olson
