It's been 1 year... Not a day has gone by that I haven't thought about you. Even though my heart aches when I think back on all the memories & all the times we shared during high school & long after, just the thought of you makes me smile. I miss you Greg, more than you know & I always will.

Greg,
I think about you a lot and miss you dearly. I keep getting that "ache" in my heart that won't go away when I think of you. It makes me so sad to know that you are gone. You never got to meet Andrew ... he's almost ten months already and a born football player. :) Doug and I show Andrew your picture and tell him about his "Uncle Greg." We hope you're looking out for him just like when you looked out for me when I took a spill down the stairs at Domenic's wedding. How embarassing (but a good story to tell)! Anyway, we miss you Greg and we will always love you. Maybe you read this. Maybe you "just know." Keep an eye on all of us, will ya? We love you.

Dear Gregories,
It's amazing how we hear of different things in life. I was happy to see the MPS retirement listing including my old grade school buddy, so I called and asked about the famous St. Catherine's running back. We got a laugh. Then my wife Jackie mentioned her only son Brandon Warren going to Iraq before Halloween. This apparently caused our talk to turn towards the tragic events which the Journal article records.
After a day of chauffering kids around Jackie read through Saturday Night Live the many beautiful testimonies we find at this great site. We are very grateful for the type of appreciation and celebration of life shown through this encounter.
A vivid memory captures Greg and Joe in the corner of 8th grade when Father Verhalen made his visit to class and Greg was saying "padre, padre, holy joe" just as Sister Lolita was coming to sit by him. We got a smile.
Our sympathy to Linda and Greg, Keep your trust in the Lord our God to bring us through. Love,
Jackie and Joe

I learned of Greg's passing in the Dominican newsletter. As his high school geometry teacher, I fondly remember his daily positive attitude, smiles and optimism; it is great to see that he was such a fine man in adulthood as he was in high school. The world was left a better place by having Greg pass through it. My thoughts and prayers and with his family.

I am saddened to say that I just heard about Greg's passing. He was a great friend in High School and will be truly missed.

Greg at St. Alphonsus mass on Jan 8, 06. He had such an applause, like I've never heard at church. I'm so proud of St. Als for this. But, so proud of Greg. What a great guy. He is our hero and true patriot.

To dear Greg, his family & friends,
It's taking us along time to write this-we just found out April 23rd, and still trying to understand/deal with. This is so hard to write, but I guess, we must do this to reach some type of foreclosure. I'm writing this looking at your picture with us at St. Al's when you spoke to us--I was so proud of you-I thought I'd pop my buttons. I'm looking at the picture your dad took of us that very day after the mass. It was the first time we actually met, but felt I knew you though our many correspondences while you were in Iraq. My very first respond from you was dated June 30th, 05, of course. We, many friends, relatives, and local businesses help in collecting items for the troops and then we mail them. I had a little blurb in the church bulletin. Greg's wonderful great aunt Rudy, calls to give me his address. Of course, I didn't know her. She was responding to our request for addresses of our sevicemen & women. We would hear from Greg quite often while in Iraq. We mailed packages every couple of weeks. He was always so appreciative, upbeat, and 100% patriot. So true & loyal to his great country. This is so hard for me, but maybe also, very needed. I just really shake my head and can't understand. We went out to eat after that first meeting three times. (Even 5 nights before his death. He was always so great, such a great attitude, good sense of humor and he was so excited about the his chances to make the SWAT team and his loyalty to the Milwaukee Police Dept. We corresponded many times after his return. He was always positive about the future and a great sense of humor. He was so easy to speak to. After our meals we would go back to our home and we would talk and watch movies until 12:00 or 12:30. He would laugh and talk. We just had no idea what he was truly going through and I feel so bad about that.
I guess this just needed to be said for me to move on-but, I feel so much for his family and his great aunt, I know he was so fond of all. But, I guess it is true, we just don't see this coming-because, believe me, my husband & I did not see this at all.
I guess when someone walks into your life, it might be for a very short time, could be a long time--they can make a big impact on us. I know Greg did that for us, We will never forget him--my thanks go off to his parents, they raised a great son.
We love & will never forget you Greg,
Sherry & Dale Magner

I was in church at St. Alphonsus in Greendale, WI when Greg came and thanked everyone for all the cards and letters he had received. His picture was in our bulletin this past Sunday and I was very sorry and sad to read about his passing. From the short time that I heard him speak, he seemed very sincere and kind.

Greg ~ I know the difference you made in one person's life -- Autumn's. I'm sure you made a difference in so many other's as well; but just the love and happiness you brought to Autumn is more than enough to have made you one of the most spectular people ever. You were one of the funniest people I ever encountered. You made my best friend one of the happiest people in the world. Everyone should have a "Greggie" in their lives. Thank you for coming into ours.

My sympathy to the Braun Family. I knew Greg by face after returning from Iraq but never had the chance to meet and talk to him in person. I too am in the military and understand the sacrifices him made to his country and also to D5. I'm very proud to call him a brother both as a soldier and a fellow Police Officer. His lost will be felt everywhere. Again, my condolences to your family-Greg will be missed but not forgetten.

I was also one of Greg's supervisors and his friend from Northridge Mall. Greg and I along with Frank Benvenuto worked many hours together. As A retired soldier, Greg and I spent many hours talking about life in the Army. Greg was one of the finest officers I ever worked with and I was very proud of him when he became a police officer. My heart goes out to his family in this sad time , but I must thank you for sharing him with us, he co-workers. Rest easy young worrior!

Our thoughts are prayers go out to the Braun family. Our family was very saddened when we received the news about Greg. Greg was like a brother as well as a great friend to myself as well as to my brothers and sister. We shared many childhood memories growing up with eachother on the same block. For example,I will never forget the day he drove his bike into the back of a school bus or those days he would wait for us to finish dinner so that we could go outside to play with him. Greg always made us laugh, thats just how he was. Greg had a great heart and spirit. We are all very proud of Greg's accomplishments in life and saddened it had to end so soon. You will be missed dearly "BUD". We love you Greg.

To the Braun Family, we will never know your pain. Greg was well liked when I was his supervisor at Northridge Mall. He was always a hard worker and made me laugh. I just heard of Greg's passing and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I can only hope and pray that Greg is at peace. I'll miss him dearly, even though the last time I saw him was when we worked at Northridge together. I met Greg when he was a new recruit at #6. He was so friendly and upbeat and always had this amazing smile on his face that could light up a room. Even after he was transferred to the north side, he would still call or stop by #6 just to see how everyone was doing. I will never forget how everytime we met he would yell "Sarge!" and run up to give me a hug. I will miss him -he was such an amazing man and touched the lives of everyone he met. I am a better person to have known him. Thank you Greg.
My deepest condolences to his family.

God bless your soul, dearest Gregory. I found comfort in someone else's passage saying that you were probably guarding Heaven's Gates. I like that thought (although I do wish that you had stayed down here a lot longer).

Words can't describe how you will be missed.

Greg at "Grandma" Ruth Shully's table

Gregory with mom, dad and sister Katie
Mary Kilpatrick
March 11, 2006
My mom is Ruth Shully, and she was like a grandmother to Gregory. Greg's mom Linda is Ruth's niece. Unfortunately, due to shoulder surgery, she was not able to attend Greg's funeral, although she wanted to with all of her heart. I know how much she loved Greg, and how terribly she misses him. Earlier this year, she arranged for Greg to come and speak at her church, St. Alphonsus. The church had collected many items for the soldiers in Iraq, and shipped them to Greg to distribute. When Greg returned from his second tour of duty, she thought it would be nice if he came to a mass, to talk to the congregation and tell them how greatful the soldiers were to receive their contributions. Greg came to mass in full uniform, and gave a wonderful speech, which led to a standing ovation when he was finished. It was a very special and proud day for Greg and his family. It's just one of many great memories my mom had of her dear Greg - along with his preference for silk boxer shorts!
Linda, Greg, Katie, and even Rosco, we're all here for you, and we love you all. May God grant Greg eternal peace, and may perpetual light shine upon him!
Love,
Mary and Craig Kilpatrick
P.S. I've added a couple of my mom's pictures to the photo gallery. The family photo was taken the day of the mass on 1/8/06, and the photo of Gregory was from 10/26/04, sitting at moms' kitchen table, shortly before he left for Iraq. What a handsome, gentle soul he was!

My prayers and thoughts go out to the Braun family. I met Greg while I was a Northridge Beat Cop in District 4 and he was a security officer at Northridge. He was so enthusiastic about his future and what it had to offer. He was ready to give to his community and country. He was eager to become a police officer. After I saw him become a police officer, he was eager to savor all that his career had to offer. Through his hard work and very pleasant personality, Greg earned a lot of respect from a lot of people, both professionally and personally. Greg, all of us may have given something to our community and country, but few people like you have given their all. You are at peace now. Please watch over your family and all those who care about you. This is a difficult time for them, but may it be some comfort that you will always be with them. Thank You for all you have given us, Greg.

I had the honor of serving with Greg at District 5, MPD. Greg was a strong leader and a good man. He inspired confidence in those he worked with. It was always a good feeling to know when Greg was on the street, and you needed help, he would move heaven and earth to get there.
Greg's loss has stirred up many feelings in me. Among the grief and pain, I found something that I was not expecting, thankfulness. I realize now that I have been blessed tremendously to have known him.
My prayers and sympathies go out to Greg's family and all that knew Greg. I feel the greatest loss is to those who never had the chance to know him.

My heart goes out to the Braun Family and anyone who had the pleasure of knowning Greg. He was a remarkable person full of life, love and laughs. He was a selfless and caring human being, which is hard to find these days. To me, he was a friend, a brother and my hero. His large chest wasn't a result of working out, but caused by the giant heart that beat within. He was a better friend to me than I could have ever hoped for. Brownie gave me a life time of great memories in only 13 years. From Dominican to Northtown to the Eastside, Greg was a huge part of my life. Greg, I pray that you have found the peace and comfort you were looking for and I thank god that you were and still are a part of my life. You were strong enough to save the world, I'm sorry this world wasn't strong enough to save you. I love you with all my heart. You and Rob save a spot for me, I'll be there someday.

Greg-
Well, words can not describe the impact that you've had on my life and the lives of others. You were an amazing soldier, police officer, and friend. I will always remember you telling me that Rangers lead the way and that the Marines followed. I would follow you anywhere, anytime, and any place and I know that you would have done the same for me. As a fellow cop you were an inspiration to me because of your dedication, enthusiasm, and strength. I enjoyed being in TAC training with you because you made me take my intensity to another level just to be in your shadow and I looked foward to being on the TAC squad with you someday. There will not be a day that I do not think about you and the great times we had. I know why god called your number, he needed the best person in the world to guard heaven's gate and brother he got him! Keep an eye on us down here, you've got a lot of backs to watch. Take care my friend, I'll see you when I get there.

It has taken me a couple of days to formulate what to post. Words cannot express the admiration that I had for greg and the pain of knowing that he is not here with us anymore. I was blessed to have him as a part of my everyday life and even more blessed that I could call him family. I am so greatful for each and every memory that I had with him. To the Braun Family-
Ryan and I both had the pleasure of working with your son at Dist. 5. He was a true ray of sunshine in the gray we all see everyday. His smile beemed from ear to ear lighting up every room he entered. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the rest of your family in this difficult time. He was great man and will be missed. we are both very sorry for your loss and thank you for sharing such a great person with the world.

My deepest sympathy to the Braun family and those who loved him. I knew Greg through my best friend, and he was never without a smile and a kiss on the hand when I saw him. His heart was kind and giving. I hope he is now at peace with himself.

Dear Braun Family,
Greg was the bravest soldier and the nicest young man. We were all so proud of his service to his country and then his city. Always honest, and loving to his mother father, sister Katie and the rest of our family. Our hearts go out to you. Much love, The Scott Shully Family

Although I never knew Greg personally, there is a bond that is deep within us who have been to the battle and seen the horrors of war. We are forever a changed people when we return home and try to fit in, where we left off. It is a sometimes a lonely difficult task. I know you are now at peace and free from the pain. May God welcome you into HIS Loving arms and grant you the peace and serenity of of HIS Great Love.
I also have two sons who are military and one is a police officer. Thank God for all those who serve their county both here and overseas, as we have learned the hard way, "Freedom Is Not Free".

I had the privilege of serving with SGT Greg Braun in Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 128th Infantry Regiment of the Army National Guard in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. He was an outstanding team leader, an example to his soldiers and a humble hero. He was someone that I and many soldiers looked up to. He will be truly missed in the company. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and everyone he touched in his life.
SGT Braun, I and the "Alpha Males" of A-2-128IN salute you.
