Gregory Burd, on his birthday 2019
Martin Burd
December 14, 2020
Death probably never fails to leave behind among the living unfulfilled wishes for one more chance to say hello, to exchange a thought or a laugh, to share some company, to say goodbye. Such is Greg's death. Because the paths of life had dispersed our family, the opportunities for these kinds of moments had become thin. But they were precious when they did occur.
Eight years ago, at Greg's invitation, we all spent a happy week together near Eagle River. Greg was delighted, really touched, that we surprised him with a party to celebrate his birthday, which fell during the week. We were happy that someone whom we cared about was happy that we cared. But the pleasure of that day also told us how seldom we could do these things, things that say "I love you, we love you," things say it with a force beyond the words themselves. Other happy occasions in Greg's company that came before and since now seem far too few. We will treasure the memories.
In a normal year, Kathy and I would have passed through Milwaukee, very likely on his birthday. We had done so last year, and while the circumstances of this year stopped our travel, we thought no more of it than "We'll see you next year." Now we desperately wish for one more chance to say hello, to pass some aimless time together, to say goodbye.
Goodbye, Greg. We hope you left us knowing what we would have said on that occasion, that we would have laughed, how welcome your company was, how sharply you will now be missed.
Rest in peace, beloved brother.
