Hubert Dretzka Obituary

Dretzka, Hubert Peter "Hub" Age 98, of Cudahy, passed away on Friday, January 5, 2018. Beloved husband of the late Violet Dretzka (nee Pappelis). Loving father of Gary (Donna) Dretzka, Joan (Daniel) Batlle and Diane (Paolo) Fellin; proud grandfather of John, Natasha, Sylvia, Natalie, Nick and Jordi; devoted son of the late Jerome and Elynor Kleineider Dretzka. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters and brothers; Marianne Cherrie, Lenore Fluyeras, Roland, Kenneth, and Jerome "Jerry" Dretzka and two that died in infancy Jerome and Joan Caryl. He was also preceded in death by in-laws James Cherrie, Nick Fluyeras and Jill Dretzka and survived by sisters-in-law Elaine and Mary Lou Dretzka and many nieces, nephews and godchildren. Hub was a proud, lifelong resident of Cudahy and a member of St Frederick/Nativity of the Lord Catholic Church. His business, Hub Dretzka Insurance and Real Estate Agency, was a 50 year institution in Cudahy. There he loyally served thousands of clients and made almost an equal number of friends in the process. From behind his larger than life desk he conducted business, dispensed wise advice, and even mentored numerous young people who were always welcome to stop by to browse through Cudahy High School yearbooks or to find an open ear to talk about whatever was their minds, making him often late for dinner (!). He had a strong sense of duty and civic pride. He was active in countless volunteer activities from the Cudahy Jaycees in his younger years, to AFS in his middle years, and to the Cudahy Family Library and the Cudahy Historical Society in his later years. One of his proudest accomplishments was seeing Cudahy's Immigrant Park and its beautiful statue rise and be inaugurated. Mostly he was an exceptional husband and father to his own children and grandchildren, his AFS children, and to many others along the way. It is anyone's guess how many two dollar bills he dispensed along the way for birthdays to all the kids he loved. Hub, "rest assured to the best insurer," to paraphrase his own business motto. You will be missed. In lieu of flowers, The Cudahy Family Library and The Cudahy Historical Society would welcome donations. Heartfelt thanks to staff and friends at The Merion. Visitation from 9:00 to 11:00 at Nativity of the Lord Church (4611 S Kirkwood Ave Cudahy, WI) on Monday January 15 followed by Mass at 11:00.

I was lucky to meet Hub through his daughters, Joan and Diane. He was already in his mid-eighties but he seemed so much younger. It was a pleasure to be at various family gatherings with him over the next years, and to spend time with him in these last few, when he was living in Evanston. He was witty, charming, and so brainy in spite of his low key style. And though he nearly made it to 100, he remained socially engaged and interested in people and the world around him. I regret that I didn't know him longer. He taught me things by the example I witnessed. He loved his kids and grandkids very much, that was clear. And even as his physical body began to decline, his mind and his charisma prevailed. Hub Dretzka was, to me, a wonder. I will think of him often and with great respect and affection.

This is a lovely obit, but frankly it's one I never wanted to read. The beautiful memories of Hub keep flooding back as he was such a huge influence on us Grandkids. Memory Eternal.

Love you, Dad. Diane

Hub was my dad's cousin and he was always looked up to in my family. I was so happy to be able to talk with him this past summer when we talked about the family genealogy. Hub has left a remarkable legacy, showing us how to live with grace and strength. May this give you comfort as you say goodbye to your dad.

Alan and I had the privilege of meeting Hubert only a few years ago. What a distinguished and dignified man. Joan and Dianne were blessed not only to have had him as their father, but to have had him for some many years. May he rest in peace.
