Jacob Lemann Obituary

Lemann, Jacob, Jr. MD Son of Jacob Lemann and Lucy Benjamin Lemann died Monday, July 30, 2007 after a brief hospitalization. Jack was born in New Orleans on August 31, 1929. Jack was devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary MacDonald Lemann, three children, Catherine, Jacob III, and Andrew, five grandchildren, Mac, Alex, Madeleine, Ezekiel, and Maia, his sister, Mary Lemann Goldman and her sons Jonathan, Benjamin and Adam. Jack attended Metairie Park Country Day School and received his BS from the University of California in 1950 and his MD from the University of Buffalo (now SUNY) in 1954. He completed his residency at Boston University. Jack devoted his professional life to understanding and curing diseases of the kidney. He treated patients and pursued research as a faculty member of the Boston University Medical School and the Medical College of Wisconsin. After his retirement from fulltime work, Jack returned to his home town of New Orleans. He had a part-time clinical appointment at Tulane University School of Medicine and saw patients at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in New Orleans. Dr. Lemann was honored with the Belding H. Scribner Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Society of Nephrology in 2003, the University of Buffalo School of Medicine Alumni Achievement Award at his 50th reunion, and the Distinguished Service Award from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1991. He authored over one hundred and fifty journal articles and book chapters on topics including calcium metabolism. Jack took every opportunity to teach his students and colleagues that intellectual curiosity and questioning are essential to learning and discovery. Funeral services will be held in New Orleans and will be private.

Dr Lemann was the consummate academic physician. He profoundly influenced my career, first as a resident in internal medicine and later as an academic colleague. He left a mark on MCW that will endure for decades.

Dear Mary and family:
Our children and we are shocked about what happened. We will miss Dr. Lemann as he is not only a great scientist doctor but also a person with passions. For many years, we have all benefited from his guidance and suggestions, and above all your friendship. We hope that you take care of yourselves and keep in touch.

Dr. Lemann (Jack, Pops or Popper to me) will live on in my heart as a warm, kind, and generous father figure. With eyes that twinkled and crinkled up when he smiled, he always asked great questions and listened to the responses. "What's fresh, honey?" The pain in my heart from his passing.

There isn't a day that goes by that lessions I learned from Dr. Lemann, as an attending physician, aren't part of my practice. His influence and demeanor will always be with me.

It was a great privilege to have known and worked with Jack. He was an outstanding example of a physician who was an excellent scientist, who inspired his students and colleagues, and cared deeply about his patients. He was also a loyal friend, and he will be greatly missed.

Our sadness is profound. Jack was a husband, father, scientist, physician, friend. His intellect and compassion were matched only by his sense of humor. Our lives have been immeasurably enriched by his presence. Our deepest sympathy and love to his family.

Jack was a great teacher. He inspired a number of outstanding physicians to follow in his footsteps in Nephrology and taught the rest of us a thing or two about teaching.

I am a younger doctor, and Dr Lemann was a great teacher as I was coming up through medical school, inspiring me to be compassionate and thorough in my work.

Jack was an inspiration to me. I attended as many of his lectures as time would allow. He was a gentleman, a scientist, a remarkable clinician and teacher. I am so sorry to hear of his passing.
