Derks Family and Friends,
Mary and I just wanted to tell you how much we miss Jim.
What we miss most about him are his sheepish little grin,
his whacky, off-beat sense of humor, and his unique view of the world.
To us, what best demonstrates the above traits was
his involvement in the Heinerbeiner Winter Festival held
in Newburg, Wisconsin in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Only Jim(and Jane) could come up with something as crazy
and fun as the "Heinerbeiner Whiner" contest in which contestants competed in various categories of whining.
To this day, on the Derks's refrigerator, hangs a wearable,
oversized button which reads "NO WHINING." From our viewpoint, considering what Jim endured over the last few years, he lived up to his motto and then some.
Perhaps, thanks to this man and his bold example, we can learn to whine less and to more appreciate our lives.

Jane,
As we discussed yesterday, Jim spoke fondly and often of you and your family. I greatly enjoyed his stories such as the perpetual birthday card, preparing oyster stew, etc. He was a man of principle and integrity and I am a better person having had the opportunity to work with him at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare - St. Joseph. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. God bless,
