James Jacobsen Obituary

Jacobsen, James A. Age 39 years. Coach Jim called the final play in his drive against cancer on December 23, 2017. He was at peace, holding his mother's hand. Preceded in death by his father Gary Jacobsen. Caring son of Larry and Mary Pat "Patty" Compton. Loving brother and friend of Michael (DeAnne) Jacobsen, Stephanie Compton and Adam (Allison) Compton. Further survived by nieces, nephew, other relatives, and friends. Jim was a beloved teacher and coach for 21 years, at Brookfield East and Sussex Hamilton high schools. In 2016, Jim helped coach the Brookfield East Spartans to their historic win of the Wisconsin State Football Championship - Division 2. His family and friends were there to support the team's run. It was the first state football championship in the school's history. As a lasting symbol to honor his life's passion for coaching, his peers at the WFCA (Wisconsin Football Coaches Association) named Jim the Assistant Coach of the Year for 2017. As he dealt with cancer treatment including clinical trials, Jim said, "I had my miracle last fall. We won state." Special thanks to Stuart Wong MD, Susan Tsai MD and their teams at Froedtert Memorial Hospital for their professionalism, superior clinical skill, technical expertise and compassionate guidance. Appreciation extended to the Horizon Hospice team. Deepest gratitude to students, colleagues and coworkers at Brookfield East and Sussex Hamilton as well as special friends from Carroll University for their enduring and supportive friendship and comforting presence. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, January 2 at Brookfield East High School Field House (3305 Lilly Road). Memorial Program begins at 6:30pm with reception to follow. All are welcome. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled on Wednesday, January 3 at Old St. Mary Catholic Church (844 N. Broadway, Milwaukee). Family will receive guests at the church - 8am until Mass begins at 10am. My condolences to Jim's family and friends. I had the privilege to coach with Jim at Brookfield East and he truly was a Spartan through and through. He was a great coach and an even better person who touched the hearts of everyone he came in contact with. He will be missed..."Pound the Rock!"

Jim came to see me in 2007 about finishing his degree in Physical Education. He explained he was an assistant coach at Brookfield East and wanted to continue to do that. His path to complete his degree was non-traditional but I believed in his ability to succeed and he did not disappoint! Jim came to see me each semester to pick out his classes - I always looked forward to seeing him and am most reminded of his kind and positive nature. I lost track of him after graduation and was so sad to see the news this morning. I will remember his smile, his love for football and players he coached, as well as the students at Brookfield East HS. He LOVED his job. My sincere sympathy to your entire family. You raised a wonderful young man.

To The Jacobsen Family,

My dearest sympathy for the loss of a "Great Spartan"!

I was lucky enough to work with Jim during my assistant days for 10 years at Brookfield East Football also when he worked at basketball for Hamilton & at East. Simply he loved high school sports and watching young students to improve not just on the football field or basketball court but also life outside of high school.

Jim will be missed but his legacy will never be forgotten. THANK YOU my friend and a "Champion" is watching us from heaven.
