Jim was a good friend with great gifts. I am sad to hear of his passing. I knew him in California and St. Louis. We talked now and then.

A blessed birthday in the "Little Kingdom," Father Jim. On earth today you would be 75 years. Now you are a new creation! We remember you with much, much love.

We pray that your delightful book, "Appointments with the Little King" will be republished, bringing many souls to the dear Infant Jesus. Pray for us all, Father Jim. May we all be united in the Little Kingdom one very bright, holy day!

Jim and I were roommates in our senior year at Marquette. He was a delightful person to be around--thoughtful, articulate, and funny. I've often thought about him over the years, and was saddened to see the notice of his death in the university's alumni publication.

I was just thinking about Jim and what he might be up to and was saddened to learn of his passing. I had the pleasure of directing his St. Joan play in Brooklyn many many years ago. I remember him as a gentle and caring person. My sympathies to his family and friends.

Fr. Jim saw poetry as a vehicle of attentiveness, a form of endless rebirth and as a path to the Divine.

I just read the news of Fr Jim's death and it hit me painfully. I knew him when he was in the Bronx at Fordham (in the 70s) and he would come to say Mass at our Monastery, (the Carmelite Monastery). He was a very dear and kind man and we wrote over the years but I have been out of touch since the 90s (my loss!) I have been nourishing myself on his poetry at the SLJ Liturgy site.
Pray for us all, Jim, and thank you for all you did for so many!

I don't know where to begin in describing my deep felt honor to have known Father Janda. Since the time I met him in Sandy to the days in St. Josephs we shared many dinners, coffees, and long talks. We would discuss in great lengths theology, the latest documentaries and the Slovak language. When I found out about his passing it felt like my best friend had just been taken. I will cherish the few copies of his literature I had the oppotunity to recieve. I love you Jim and I thank you for all you gave myself as well as humanity.

Thank you J. Janda. Your words were sweet ointment to my spirit. May the angels rejoice as they carry you Home. Your prayers will now be a blessing for all of us. Stay near. - D.

I just recently "met" Jim and now he is gone. Pray for me friend, as I will for you, and thank you for your Christ-filled heart. Frank (Worcester Ma)

I never met Fr.Jim personally, but his wonderful poems on the web have inspired my own poems and prayers written for our small parish here in the English Midlands week by week.
Thank you, and may 'flights of angels sing thee to thy rest'

I always check the J. Janda poetry in the homily service but had no idea that it came from a brother priest. The selection each week is special to me and I often share it in my homily. This Sunday I will offer Mass for him and the family who mourns his passing.

It has been an honor knowing Fr. Janda. How amazing to have known someone who worked with Dorothy Day (Catholic Worker) and on the Rosebud Indian Reservation before the Wounded Knee incident. His humility and kindness remains with me. He will be missed.

fr. Jim was beloved by us all at Blessed Sacrament. He was a very humble, gentle soul that loved all of nature and humanity--everything made by God. The children of the parish were special to him, and he would talk at their level. He knew all the stories of women in the bible and had the heart of a poet. He told us that he learned so much from us (in bible study), but we know that we learned much more from him. We love you, Fr. Jim, and we know that you will help us to our heavenly home, where we believe you are finally with your beloved Jesus.

I had the extreme privilege of becoming a friend of Fr. Janda's during his retirement at St. Joseph's Villa. Jim was a quiet, thoughtful, loving and grace-ful man and priest. His life experiences had brought him a knowledge of the spirit that was rare. He expressed his love of life in his written words: poetry and short works. He was a philosopher in his heart and took the time to listen and react to those around him. I will miss Jim. He will always be in my prayers and thoughts. He is a wonderful person.

I met Fr. Jim at the Villa during my Dad's final illness in 2004. Fr. Jim was a man of extraordinary intellect and a wonderful, generous, and compassionate heart. I loved hearing his poetry and reading his stories and sharing them with children. We miss him very much.
