James Weitzman Obituary

Weitzman, James M. "Jim" Died in his home on June 25, 2015, in Rockville, MD, due to complications from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or "Lou Gehrig's Disease"), a progressive neurodegenerative condition. He was 68. Jim was born on June 3, 1947 in Milwaukee, WI, to Peter and Anne Weitzman. He was a graduate of Columbia University and the University of WI Law School. He married Malka Blair in 1972. In 1975, the Weitzmans moved to Rockville, where Jim was a partner in the firm of Shrinsky, Weitzman and Eisen. The firm later merged with the Washington offices of Kaye Scholer. Jim retired from the firm after founding New World Radio Group. The radio stations reflected Jim's love of international and multicultural programming, which has been the format of the broadcast group for 23 years. Jim was a gifted communications attorney with a passion for radio engineering that proved invaluable to his many law clients and in the leadership of his radio stations. Jim is survived by his wife Malka of 43 years, a son Avi of Scranton, PA and a sister Cheri (David) Goldberg of San Francisco, CA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Karie Silberman, a life-long friend of Jim's, who served as his primary caretaker during his illness. Jim was buried in his family plot at Agudas Achim Cemetery. July 18, 2015

To the Weitzman Family, with deepest condolences in the passing of Jim. We first met when Jim was a lawyer for the Spanish Broadcasting System radio consortium in NYC. He brought life and light to the radio station and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him there. I personally had the privilege of working with Jim as assistant to the CEO of the company. Although he was not engaged with SBS after he started his own radio business, he will be always remembered and cherished for his contributions. Farewell friend, you will always be remembered and my your memory be for a blessing. Haydee

I was so sorry to hear of Jim's passing. Our parents were very good friends. When Peter and Ann 's McDonald's empire grew to three restaurants, they asked my mom to handle the books and payroll, a job she loved and worked at for many years.

Jim had a great zest for life. I am saddened to hear that he succumbed to ALS. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

My sincere condolences. I had the pleasure of broadcasting on WNWR for numerous years, and had the even greater pleasure of meeting Jim several times. May he rest in peace! ~~ Barry Reisman

Malka, I was saddened to hear of Jim's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Avi. I have only fond memories of our friendship that began in Pittsburgh in the 70s and continued through the years. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

I'm so sorry to hear that we've lost Jim. I'll remember him as a very knowledgeable and passionate gentleman with an incredible sense of humor. I first met Jim in the 70's when he was the station attorney for the radio station I worked for in Colorado.

As the years passed, we found opportunities to work together many times, and I will cherish those memories.

RIP and 73, Jim - you made a difference in so many lives.

My sincere condolences to Jim's family. He was my FCC Attorney in the early 1980's and I had also known Peter D. Weitzman in the late 1970's, and actually sold him a Honda car. Although I was a few years younger, I remember Jim on his Ham radio in Milwaukee, while I was growing up in Sheboygan, WI. He got my call letters, WTRW, when a boat sank in the Mediterranean Sea...and I also worked for him on a project at Camp Ramah, in Wisconsin in the 1980's. I will miss his spirit, and sharp thinking.
