I was following up on a few names that we had not heard from when we were planning the 50th Class Reunion and Joan was one of those we had not heard from and it turned out her email address had changed. I left a message on her voice mail and she called me back a couple of hours later we had a 40+ minute conversation about Rice, life, families and what we were looking forward to in the future. She was not going to be able to attend because her daughter and son in law were moving to Portland, OR and she was going out to help them get settled into their new home. I was not a close friend in high school but I was always impressed with Joan's thoughtfulness, intelligence and genuine friendliness. I am so glad that I made that contact this past Spring and had the opportunity to speak with her one more time.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

I am so very sad. Joan and I met in high school, both newcomers to Burlington, Vermont. She befriended me, a shy, scared introvert. I was so pleased to follow in the footsteps of her strength and courage. She helped me to see what I could be.

Joan was a woman of amazing intellect and vehement viewpoints. She was a trailblazer and a bright comet in the sky. May her memory shine brightly over all of us.
