John touched so many of us in so many ways. He never knew me, but touched me deeply in how he related to the teens he coached. How fortunate you as a family were to have had him in your presence for so long. May you find peace in knowing he was an extraordinarily good man.

I was very shocked when I heard about the tragic loss of Mr. Chekouras. During my years at Homestead(92-96), my memories of him always brought a smile on my face. He treated everyone as if they were the star of his team, even if they were only a spectator. He touched many people with his kindness, and his sense of humor. He will be greatly missed. My thoughts will always be with his family.

When I heard the news about Mr. Chekouras, I couldn't believe it; he was one of the strongest men I will ever know. But beyond that, he was kind hearted, compassionate, and loved by many. I had two gym classes with Mr. Chekouras and I will always remember his kindness. Most people wear a costume to become a school mascot; Mr. Chekouras made the Highlander what it is just by walking out. May the God of all comfort hold you during this difficult time. You all remain in my prayers.

I can honestly say that Coach was one of the few teachers / people that I honestly liked and respected during my years at Homestead(92-96). He was the best Gym teacher ever and a all around aproachable person. He treated me like a member of his team and he treated every memer of his team like family. I was sad to hear he had passed, but everything special ends too soon. Coach touched alot of lives and I am extremly appreciative of the way that he touched mine.
Rest In Peace Coach Chekouras

I worked with John at the Milwaukee Bucks basketball camps at Carroll College back in the mid 90's. John was an incredible teacher, articulate communicator, and warm hearted man. I especially appreciated the way John accepted me and made me feel welcome even though I was a "nobody" from a small town near La Crosse who just wanted to learn how to coach. On numerous occasions, he took the time to visit with me and help me learn. I will never, ever forget that and will be forever grateful to John. To this day, I consider him one of best coaches I have ever been around. He will not be forgotten.
God's blessings!

I was blessed to have had John Chekouras as a teacher for two English classes my senior year at Beloit Catholic High School
(1975-76). I believe it was his first year teaching, but from our first class session it was apparent that Mr. Chekouras was gifted. His ability AND desire to reach within each of us students and guide us along the right path was something for which I will always be grateful.

Rosie: Heaven is better today with the addition of John. I have so many wonderful memories of John from the Milw. Bucks Camps. I always felt I would have loved to have my son's play for John. He was in a special class all by himself. He was one of our favorite and loyal camp coaches and director. Our prayers are with you for strength from the Lord for you and the family. He is in a good place and will always keep an eye on all of us. Keep the wonderful memories alive in your heart. Jerry and Sandra Sullivan

The first time I met John I was with my son at DQ. My son, who was 6 or 7, had been at John's BB camp earlier in the day. John said hi to my son and called him by his name. I asked who that was and my son told me that was the Varsity BB coach. I introduced myself and John gave my son a compliment. I had many more moments with John, but I will never forget the impression John made on me at our first meeting. He will be missed.
