I often visit Stratford and pass St James. It has been almost 75 years since John and I left there to spend 8 years with the Jesuits at Prep and BC. When he moved to Milwaukee, Bill Simpson , CEO of Raybestos approached m to replace John. I chode bot to because je was to hard to foólow and jhe was a close friend fór liife. I now that with esch day that passes God willl rejooin us.George Roberge

I apologize for this late condolence of one of the closest friends this man ever had. Johnny and I traveressed St James School, Fairfield Prep, Boston College and summers at Raybestos. Forget the sports! For all the years we were close (all the McGourthy's), there was a kindness and love given to there fellow man like no other. John's mom and dad worked hard to give their family everything needed for life...Christian values. Nothing was given. it was all earned........in the classroom, on the field, in the home and in the Church.
From the time we were little boys, until we became men, God gave John the role of "Leader", be kind to all, and to act as my servant on earth. Many parish priests and Jesuits saw these qualities and many more in him.
I will always treasure the memories of Johnny, and regret the reunions I missed.
This morning I had breakfast with 10 of our mutual friends from Prep. He will always be in our hearts and conversations remembered with truesr friendship and love.
We know we will all be together again. We know what our Higher Power wants us to do, and surely my boyhood friend will watch over us and the many other lives he touched.

I knew John when I was growing up, but I really got to know him as a graduate of BC. His love for The Heights was genuine. His enthusiasm for his college encouraged many area high school students to enroll at BC. I will be sure to toast you, McGoo, at the start of the next football season.

Although no words can really help to ease the loss you bear, just know that your are very close in every thought and prayer.

Although I only knew John for only a short time, I knew I was in the presence of an exceptional person. I am so sorry for your loss. My Dad had the pleasure of building the McGourthy family home in River Trail Estates. It was obvious to us all that Mr. McGoo loved his family and loved to share his time with all he came into contact with. We were blessed that our paths crossed.

Mary & Ted Hodan send all the McGourthys our condolences. John was unique!! Kind, extremely generous, always fun to be with, exceptionally smart and creative, caring yet tough, a born leader, entrepreneur, and, as 6'4" 240# Boston College football teammate Bob Smith told me years ago: "Pound for pound John McGourthy was by far the toughest man I have ever known." He WILL be missed. Mary & Ted P.S. Because we are in Mesa, Arizona we will not be able to personally share our experiences of John with you at the wake or funeral.

Mr. McGoo was one of the great men whom I had the privilege to carry his bag of sticks for 18 holes as a young man working at OCC. Many great memories there! Condolences to Teddy and the rest of the family.

John was a wonderful man and a great friend of the Irish Cultural and Hertitage Center of Wisconsin. The ICHC stands today due to John's help and generosity. His positive nature will be truly missed. When I met the McGourthys back in 83' i remember seeing this huge loving family, having fun just simply sitting around the dinner table. Mr. McGoo adoring his "Pumkin" all his children and welcoming whomever came by.
