John McGourthy Obituary

McGourthy, John D. Sr. Peacefully began his new journey with his loving family singing and toasting him at his side as he entered eternal life on January 31, 2014 at the age of 72. Best friend and adoring husband for 50 years of Judith (nee Colladay) McGourthy. Resident of Mequon and Boynton Beach, FL. Greatest father of John, Jr., Matthew (Laura), Bryan (Lisa), Kathryn (Shem) Lemke, Thomas (Marissa), Edward McGourthy. Amazing PA to John III, Caroline, William, Liam, Nolan, Jake, Boden and Tatum McGourthy; Sean, Mildred Rose and Kira Lemke. Dear brother of Jerome McGourthy and of the late Janet and Edward McGourthy. Further survived by many other relatives and many, many great friends here in the US and in Ireland. John D McGourthy "McGoo", born July 3, 1941, went to the Lord peacefully on January 31, 2014 surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born in Bridgeport, CT and grew up in Stratford, CT. He attended ST James Catholic School and Fairfield Prep where he started his football career. He received a 4 year scholarship to play football for Boston College class of 1963. He was offered an opportunity to play professional football but chose rather to marry his high school sweetheart and serve his country during the Vietnam War as a Navy lieutenant. While working for Rabestos Manhattan he was transferred to Milwaukee WI where he and his wife, Judy knew immediately they had found their home. Shortly after he made the decision to branch out on his own becoming the founder and president of Thermoset, Inc. He was a big part of the Milwaukee community supporting Irishfest, The Rescue Mission, and numerous charitable foundations. Those who were fortunate enough to know John will agree he was a bigger than life generous caring Irishman with a strong faith who loved his family, his Alma Mater, sports, and serving his country. He was a father figure to many and loved by all. Visitation will take place on Monday, February 3, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Feerick Funeral Home. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, February 4, at 11:00 AM, at Lumen Christi Catholic Church, Mequon Campus, corner of Mequon Road and Range Line Road, followed by interment at St. James Cemetery across the street from the Parish. Memorials in John's name may be made to the Milwaukee Rescue Mission, 830 N. 19th Street, Milwaukee, WI 53233 or Lawlis Family Hospice, 13111 North Port Washington Road, Mequon, WI 53097.

I apologize for this late condolence of one of the closest friends this man ever had. Johnny and I traveressed St James School, Fairfield Prep, Boston College and summers at Raybestos. Forget the sports! For all the years we were close (all the McGourthy's), there was a kindness and love given to there fellow man like no other. John's mom and dad worked hard to give their family everything needed for life...Christian values. Nothing was given. it was all earned........in the classroom, on the field, in the home and in the Church.
From the time we were little boys, until we became men, God gave John the role of "Leader", be kind to all, and to act as my servant on earth. Many parish priests and Jesuits saw these qualities and many more in him.
I will always treasure the memories of Johnny, and regret the reunions I missed.
This morning I had breakfast with 10 of our mutual friends from Prep. He will always be in our hearts and conversations remembered with truesr friendship and love.
We know we will all be together again. We know what our Higher Power wants us to do, and surely my boyhood friend will watch over us and the many other lives he touched.

May God Bless and Watch Over all of you.

I knew John when I was growing up, but I really got to know him as a graduate of BC. His love for The Heights was genuine. His enthusiasm for his college encouraged many area high school students to enroll at BC. I will be sure to toast you, McGoo, at the start of the next football season.

Father of mercies and God of all consolation, You pursue us with untiring love and dispel the shadow of death with the bright dawn of light.

Comfort The McGourthy Family in their loss and sorrow. Be their refuge and their strength, O Lord, and lift them from the depths of grief into the peace and light of Your Presence.

Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, by dying has destroyed our death, and by rising, restored our life. Enable them therefore to press on toward him, so that, after their earthly course is run, He may reunite him with those he love, when every tear will be wiped away. I ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Although no words can really help to ease the loss you bear, just know that your are very close in every thought and prayer.

To the entire McGourthy Family:
Although I only knew John for only a short time, I knew I was in the presence of an exceptional person. I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you can all find solace in the fact that John was a faith-filled person who looked forward to meeting his Lord. The world has lost a wonderful person, but Heaven has gained a extra-special angel. Blessings on all of you.

Mary & Ted Hodan send all the McGourthys our condolences. John was unique!! Kind, extremely generous, always fun to be with, exceptionally smart and creative, caring yet tough, a born leader, entrepreneur, and, as 6'4" 240# Boston College football teammate Bob Smith told me years ago: "Pound for pound John McGourthy was by far the toughest man I have ever known." He WILL be missed. Mary & Ted P.S. Because we are in Mesa, Arizona we will not be able to personally share our experiences of John with you at the wake or funeral.
