Joseph Slocum Obituary

Joseph "Scott" Slocum

Joseph "Scott" Slocum unexpectedly passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2021 from complications of Covid at the age of 62.

Scott was born on May 24, 1958 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin to Jean and Albert Slocum. He grew up in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, attended Cumberland Grade School and graduated from Whitefish Bay High School in 1976. Scott then attended UW Eau Claire before transferring to UW Madison where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, graduating in 1980. Scott joined the Russ Darrow Group before making a career change into the mortgage business. He retired in 2011 due to the progression of Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy, a disease that he was diagnosed with at age 24.

On August 8, 1987, he married the love of his life, Susan Kohls. In 1988, they established their home on Waltham Road in Madison, Wisconsin. There they developed a strong bond with their neighbors who became as family. They moved to Naples, Florida in October 2020 to enjoy the warmth and sunshine and to be near Scott's sister Susie.

Scott touched so many lives with his infectious smile, kind and compassionate spirit and sense of humor. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Please keep him in your memories and in your heart. He never complained about his Myotonia, simply stating that you have to play with the cards your dealt.

Scott was preceded in death by his father, Albert, his mother, Jean, his sister, Debbie DeNoble and his beloved dog, Sam. He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Susan, his brother, Dr. Peter Slocum, sister Sue (Russ) Darrow, brothers-in-law, DuWayne Kohls, Doug (Deb) Kohls, sister-in-law, Cynthia Kohls and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, along with friends from the Waltham Road and Verona Walk neighborhoods, as well as his many close childhood friends.

A private service and burial will take place at Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee this summer and celebrations of life will be held in both Madison and Milwaukee.

A special thank you to the nurses and doctors at Physician's Regional Hospital for their care of Scott during his short battle and Sandy Olson for her friendship and support.

Memorials may be made in Scott's memory to the Dane County Humane Society in Madison, Wisconsin.

When we lose someone, we must learn not to live without them, but to live with the love they left behind. (I love you.)
