Granddad I love you with all my heart!!! I can't believe you are actually gone. The thought of never seeing you again still brings tears to my face. I wish I could have seen you one more time! I was coming home in one week, but you were gone before I could make it. I haven't seen you in two years and now I won't ever again get to see your smile. I loved being around you because the jokes were never ending, along with the comments about me looking like my father's twin. I wish I could hug you as I write this now. I will defiantly come and see you before I leave town. I miss you deeply and no words can ever express the love I have for you. Ride on granddad....ride on.....
Latoska Lafont & The Dynamic Exploits (1969)

Latoska “LaFont” Fields was a natural leader. I met him when I was 16 years old, an age when young men are only interested in proving themselves, not taking time to analyze personal relationships. I was seeking to prove myself as a musician, and Latoska needed a guitar player. From the first time I talked to him over the phone, I somehow instinctively knew that he and I would become good friends. Latoska asked me to join his band, The Dynamic Exploits, and by accepting, I was given an opportunity to develop musical skills I never knew I had, to learn things about life that I might otherwise have never been able to experience, and to develop lifelong friendships I never knew were possible. Being the leader that he was, Latoska hooked us up.
Latoska was adventurous and open minded. He was always ready to listen and to try new things. We went through a lot together back then, learning and performing some of the great R&B tunes of the times and venturing into jazz, playing music that most teenage bands would never even think about. Through our efforts and initiative, we received the admiration and earned the respect of many adults and other musicians, though we were just a bunch of kids. We also experienced the hostility of the riots, and had to take on the challenge of racial discrimination of all kinds, but our band persisted and our friendship endured it all. Latoska truly appreciated and valued each one of us.
Latoska did not have an easy life, and he had his share of problems, but for anyone who really knew him, he was a fair and honest man with a good heart. You always knew where you stood with Latoska. He didn’t put up with any nonsense from people, but he didn’t unnecessarily dish it out either. Latoska and I truly liked and respected each other, even in disagreement, and that never changed. Seeing him for the first time last summer after 34 years of being completely out of touch, that was abundantly obvious. It was old times just as always, and was mutually very inspiring.
Latoska and I talked many times over the past several months, and it was incredible to rediscover some of the things we remembered from all those years ago. His mind was sharp and his memory was very impressive. I’m very thankful I was given the chance to reconnect and spend that time with him, including sending him copies of band photos and music recordings I had safely kept over the years. I think it brought Latoska a lot of joy, and I’m happy I was able to do that for him.
I’m sure there are many more interesting anecdotes I could share about my unique friendship with this man, but I will simply close by saying this…. I absolutely love James Brown and his music, but to me, Latoska will always be Soul Brother Number One.
