Lisa Phillips Obituary

Phillips, Lisa Age 56, of Whitefish Bay, WI, passed away June 29, 2011, after a courageous six-year battle with breast cancer. She is survived by her husband James Phillips, her son Bryan, Lake Tahoe, CA, son Stephen, Whitefish Bay, and daughter Carley, Milwaukee. Other relatives include her parents, Sharon and James Roth, Dallas, brothers Ladd, Dallas and Tom, Louisville, step-sister Sandy, Allentown, PA, step-brother Ed, New City, NY, and their respective families. Lisa was an adventurous person who had a passion for travelling, the outdoors and social gatherings. She will be remembered for her talent, creativity, and her huge heart. Lisa spent many years as a speech pathologist, working with pre-school Head Start children at a number of locations throughout the central city of Milwaukee. She was a loved member of many different social and volunteer groups. One group that was very important to her was an interfaith meal program in the inner city of Milwaukee, which she ran for over a decade. She also organized a number of social action activities for her temple. She willingly accepted responsibility and accomplished what she started. In her free time, Lisa was an avid beader. Last week a creation of hers was featured in Bead and Button Magazine's annual book. She created hundreds of beaded pieces, many original, and taught a number of classes. Biking was also a great love of hers and she tackled as many bike trips and trails as she could make time for. She showcased her spontaneity with her delicious cooking, never making the same recipe twice. It is clear that Lisa had a passion for life. She was a wonderful friend and family member who will be greatly missed. Funeral services 10:00 AM Sunday, July 3, 2011, at Congregation Sinai, 8223 N. Port Washington Rd., Fox Point. Private interment. Memorial gifts to Congregation Sinai, Columbia St. Mary's Cancer Center, Milwaukee, or Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, are appreciated. The family will receive friends Sunday at Congregation Sinai from 5-8PM.

So many of our Loose Bead Society members are deeply saddened with the loss of our Lisa. Her enthusiasm and excitement were the only reasons I joined a few years ago. You should know we had our own little memorial for her on July 18. We all felt this loss and can only imagine the depth of your void. Personally, I am very sad when I think that her star presence is gone.

How lucky for you all that she touched your lives in the familial way. Some of us are just plain lucky to get a husband like Jim. She wrote how good you are and how you took care of her.
What a wonderful example Lisa was of a caring mother. Now go kids, cry a little longer then make a difference like mom taught you to do.

I'm so sorry to hear of Lisa's death. She was a unique and special person who was a real blessing to us all. Even though we left Milwaukee almost 10 years ago, I think of her often and remember her wonderful smile and enthusiasm for life. She will be missed but will live on in the wonderful memories she gave us all.

Lisa was a true gem. She organized a group of fun volunteers to share their rousing spirit with the residents of our family homeless shelter. Her enthusiasm and leadership brought the members of Congregation Sinai for repeat visits; engaging children and families in various memorable activities. May her memory be eternal.

Jim and Family,

Lisa’s funeral service was moving and inspirational, and beautiful in its simplicity.

Later that afternoon I walked my dog and visited the Whitefish Bay Armory memorial for the first time.

Sure enough, I saw the plaque that reads “from Lisa and Jim Phillips.”

She must have willed it!

You have our deepest sympathy.

Sincerely,

Keith and Lori Lester

On behalf of the Loose Bead Society, please accept our heartfelt sympathies. As a member of our Society, Lisa not only showed her love of beading, but also her willingness to become actively involved in Society events. Her enthusiasm, creativity, and eagerness to share her knowledge were an inspiration to us all. Lisa was responsible for our first community service project. She led us in a teaching/sharing event at the homeless shelter in which she had been active. This ultimately resulted in the formation of our Society's Community Service Coordinator position and committee. For many years, Lisa served on the Programming Committee, where she led us in our initial hands on program (Hands On Hardware!) and continuously shared her knowledge through presentations and by serving as a table captain. Lisa's enthusiasm was never more apparent than at our Retreat, where she inspired us with her spectacular projects. Throughout her illness, Lisa's continued zest for all things beady exemplified how to live life to its fullest. Lisa will be greatly missed by the Loose Bead Society, but her many contributions and her high standards of excellence will continue to inspire us all.

My deepest sympathy to all of Lisa's family at this sad time. I was privileged to know Lisa for over 40 years. I was always amazed at the breadth of Lisa's activities and the energy and creativity she brought to all of them. She was definitely blessed with a wonderful husband and their 3 great children, but her life was much too short. I will be one of many who will miss her.

Jim and Family,
My husband and I are so saddened with the passing of Lisa. Lisa was very special to me. We had many conversations that were great for both of us as life goes. We also shared many hours of beading together. I thank God that I was lucky enough to see my dear friend 3 weeks ago at the Bead and Button show. Not many people have the oppurtunity to have a friend as I did in Lisa and am greatfull. She will be missed.
