Margaret Clark Obituary

Clark, Margaret (Nee O'Connor) Joined hands with her Lord on October 1, 2011 at age 97 at Horizon Hospice, Mequon, WI. She slipped the tethers of this beautiful earth to reunite with her son, Robert Rushford Normoyle who passed away at the young age of 18. Margaret was born to William and Carolyn O'Connor on April 30, 1914, in Oak Park, IL and is survived by her two loving daughters, Suzi McCullough (the late John) and Kate Normoyle of Milwaukee, WI and by her devoted sister, Jeanne Baker, (the late Russ) of Mequon, WI. She is further survived by daughters-in-law, Elaine Williams (the late Robert) and Delores Clark, (the late Dale), six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and special friend, Lore Borth. Margaret attended Gregg Secretarial School in Chicago and worked for the Chicago Tribune until her marriage in 1938 to the late Robert M. Normoyle. They moved to Milwaukee during the 2nd WW and while her husband was serving overseas Margaret raised their 3 children and ran the family business, "The Pig 'N Whistle", in Shorewood, WI. In 1954 Margaret married Joseph A. Clark of Milwaukee, WI. She was an incredible volunteer and founded several garden clubs. She was chairman of the Milwaukee Girl Scout Cookie Drive for many years and was instrumental in founding the Mayor's Beautification Committee which began the tradition of "The People's Tree" in City Hall, plantings along Wisconsin Ave., revamping the downtown bridge houses and the yearly planting of Summerfest grounds by local school children. The group also decided that the geranium best matched the hardy spirit of Milwaukee and named it as the city flower. Along with her best friend, Esther Hume, Margaret would hand deliver beautification awards to city homes that showed exceptional pride. Margaret gave many selfless volunteer hours to Women in Community Service. She was a founder of the Public Museum's Greenhouse Garden Club and worked for years maintaining the museum plantings and raising museum funds through Poinsettia and Geranium sales. She was a past president of the Milwaukee Art Museum Garden Club and in the 1960's she was the chairman of the National Federation of Garden Clubs Convention held in her beloved Milwaukee. Margaret was passionate about her spiritual life. She was an active member of Church Women United and a cherished member of Westminster Presbyterian Church from the 1940's until it closed its doors recently. Margaret will no doubt be remembered best for her fun-loving, happy spirit and for her deep conviction that God was always to be looked to for making her world right. When remembering Margaret's incomparable sense of humor a smile will undoubtedly cross one's face and a "I miss you" will be whispered. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Margaret's wonderful home caregivers; Amber Brown and to all the loving hearts at Horizon Hospice, Mequon, WI. Visitation will take place on Saturday, October 8, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at the Feerick Funeral Home, followed by a service honoring Margaret's life at 3:00 PM. Interment at Wisconsin Memorial Park Cemetery will be private for the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Margaret's name may be made to your favorite charity.

As a child growing up in the church , I always felt that Margaret was so dignified and kind. As I grew into adulthood and reflected on those from my past, her integrity stands out in wherever she put her efforts. I fondly remember the wonderful days at Westminster Presbyterian, where my father, Carl Simon was minister, as a time where my values were formed by strong women and men that not only professed their faith, but exhibited it every day in their actions. She was so kind to our family, and I will always remember her giving spirit and smile. The world was blessed to have her in our midst, and is now lessened in her passing.

Know that Margaret enhanced the lives of her many friends and indeed of the community during her countless hours of community service. Her foresight brought the garden club movement forward to the attention of many individuals - we are grateful to her for all her service.
