Margaret Steinam Obituary

Steinam, Dr. Margaret Phillips, MD Margaret found peace on November 20, 2017 at the age of 94. Born June 30, 1923, she led a very full life. "Maggie" or "Speed" or "Sprouty" as she was known to family and friends was a true renaissance woman- she accomplished so much in her lifetime. After graduating from University of Illinois, she spent a brief period as Dean of Women at Iowa, then on to Nursing School at University of Minnesota. Still feeling she could accomplish more she attended Medical School at Northwestern University, where she also completed her residency in Internal Medicine. She and her husband, Ed, moved to Woodstock, Illinois, where she had a very successful medical practice. In addition to her academic pursuits, Margaret was an avid musician and sportswoman. She played violin, tennis, and golf. In her later years, she began to participate in triathlons, completing her last triathlon at age 86. She also competed in numerous local and national tennis tournaments, and a variety of events in the Senior Olympics. Margaret is survived by her daughters, Dr. Susan (Cory) Wilson, and Patricia Saunders, as well as her loving grandchildren Ben and Margaux Wilson. The family would like to thank Carol Walicki, Peggy Kirkeeng, and Renata Luczkowska for their devotion to Margaret through the years, as well as the staff at Newcastle Place in Mequon, and the staff of Horizon Hospice during the past few months. A special thank you to Dr. Julia Penn for her wonderful care of Margaret for many years. A private "Celebration of Life" will take place on Margaret's birthday, June 30, 2018, in Mequon, WI.

While going through papers I came across her Christmas letter from 1984 with a personal letter attached to me. I have saved it all these years. I immediately started crying and the memories returned of her at Woodstock Memorial. I admired her so much for going from nursing to becoming an MD. I left the hospital that year and went from nursing to medical sales for the rest of my career. She was such an inspiration to me. I also remember her huge bowls of ice cream she treated herself to on the weekends. Such a lovely woman. Going over her obit I saw she started doing Triathlons later in life. I was amazed to read this because I did my first 2 last year at the age of 70 and now I'm hooked. I feel we have a kindred spirit. I do miss her drive and her love of people.

I think of Margaret often and miss her vibrant presence. The world is a lesser place without her.

I miss Margaret. Still remember the first time we went biking together and was astounded to be outbiked by an 86 year-old. Nor will I forget her Bush presidency countdown wrist watch. Or her Christmas letters.

An amazing woman. Tom and i are glad we were among her friends.

Thank you Susan for letting us know of her death.
