Mark Teply Obituary

Teply, Mark L. Born into Eternal Life on Friday, November 10, 2006, age 64, after a courageous 2-1/2 year battle with a brain tumor (CNS Lymphoma). Loving husband and soul mate of Nancy (nee Wilkowske). Devoted father of David (Angelica), Stephanie (Benjamin Westney), Andrew, and Grant. Beloved son of Gertrude (Kupfer) and the late Lawrence Teply. Brother of Larry (Frances) Teply. Grandfather of Michael and Mason Teply. Son-in-law of Lois and Howard Wilkowske. Brother-in-law of Sally and Kenny McMillan, and Terrie and Bryan Ambrosio. Uncle of Robert (Alison) Teply, Benjamin Teply, Casey (fianceé Sarah Noe) McMillan, Courtney McMillan, and Bryan Ambrosio. He was preceded in death by brother-in-law, Gary Wilkowske. Further survived by many other relatives and friends. Mark was born on January 11, 1942 in Lincoln, Nebraska. He received his B.S., M.A., and Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Nebraska. Mark was a professor at the University of Florida for 17 years before coming to the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee in 1985, where he has been a mathematics professor for the past 21 years and served as the graduate coordinator. Mark was noted for his mathematics research, publishing a substantial number of refereed papers. He served as editor-in-chief of the international journal, "Communications in Algebra" for the past 7 years. Mark enjoyed traveling, often in connection with invited talks at mathematics conferences. He also enjoyed attending soccer games, science fairs, and the many music concerts of his children. A highlight for Mark this year was being able to stand up at his daughter's wedding in September. We thank our many friends who helped make this possible on such short notice. The family would like to thank the staff at Froedtert Hospital for their compassionate care, especially Dr. Christopher Chitambar, Dr. Hendrikus Krouwer, Julie, Jean, and the staff of 4NT. We would further like to thank his therapists and nurses at Columbia St. Mary and all who lent us support during this difficult time. Mark will be sorely missed by his family, friends, colleagues, students, and the mathematics community at large. He will always be remembered as a very modest, nice guy. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 17 from 4:00-7:00 PM at the Feerick Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, November 18 at 10:00 AM at Fox Point Ev. Lutheran Church, 7510 N. Santa Monica Blvd., Fox Point. Interment will take place at Memorial Cemetery, Fremont, Nebraska on Tuesday, November 21 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Fox Point Lutheran Church appreciated. FEERICK FUNERAL HOME 2025 East Capitol Drive Shorewood (414)962-8383

I am very sorry to hear that Mark Teply passed away. He guided my first steps at UWM during my exchange stay in the academic year 1988/89. I will always remember his kind support for all his exchange students.

We will always thank you for all the guide to both supporting our family in Milwaukee and pursuing our study in UWM. We remember you helped us decide our sons' name, Alexander and Eric, like family. Especially for me, you will be remembered a admirable research adviser in my dissertation. Last 5 years I has been your student will be honorable time of my life.

I'm so glad I got to visit with Mark and the rest of his family at the reunion this summer. I have fond memories of family dinners at his house when we were kids. Memories of red, white and blue jello; of Mark locking us cousins in Uncle John's basement room; of bending our elbows at a pub in Lincoln while Steve played the banjo. I'll miss him, but I'm thankful for the memories.

To the whole Teply family,

I have such fond memories of all my time with you at all Stephanie's and my rehearsals and concerts together (but especially the quartet rehearsals at your house!). I was so thrilled to hear of Stephanie's recent wedding, and incredibly saddened to hear of your loss. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are always with you. Love, Wendy

Our sympathies and prayers are with you on the passing of Professor Teply. I never met him since I joined the UF department with the Emch Chairmanship and outside recruitment, but he has been mentioned to me.
