Marla Lichtenberger Obituary

Lichtenberger, Marla Marla K. Lichtenberger, DVM, DACVECC, age 66, passed away on April 4, 2019, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born in Milwaukee to the late Jack and Johanna (Weber) Lichtenberger. Marla is survived by her loving partner & eternal soulmate, Mouna Senno. Further survived by siblings: Mark (Connie) Lichtenberger, Gayl Lichtenberger and Craig Lichtenberger. Loving aunt of Shay (Dan) Husslein, Shawn Lukes, Jacob and Julia Lichtenberger. Special great aunt of Jonah and Sofie Husslein, and Raven Gasser and great, great aunt to Jonah Lichtenberger. She leaves behind numerous cousins, tons of friends, here and abroad, her h.s. posse, Sara, Nancy, Pat and Wendy, and her special friend, Will Chavez. Also, her two furry companions- dog Tico and the late Packer-her beloved three legged MECA mascot. After partying her way through UW Oshkosh, Marla got serious about her career and left for the Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana, India. She arrived on crutches with a steamer trunk & no language skills. She was an original bad***. After receiving her vet degree and becoming board certified in the U.S., she interned at New York's famed Animal Medical Center. She completed her residency at Animal Emergency Center/Lakeshore in Glendale in addition to stints in Connecticut and Hawaii. Marla was the proud owner of MECA (Milwaukee Emergency Center for Animals) in Greenfield. She was a board certified veterinarian in emergency and critical care for small animals and exotics and was a frequent international speaker as well as a published researcher. She also created the MECA Wisconsin Police Canine Vest Foundation to help purchase and train police K-9's and to outfit these animal first-responders with protective vests. She touched many lives, from human, furry, scaly and slithery, and she never met an animal she didn't have compassion for. Marla was a lover of all things Brewers, Packers, and Bucks and her lucky family and friends were treated to the "suite life" at many games. She was honored to throw out the first pitch at a Brewer's game which was a highlight in her life. To know Marla was to experience her limitless generosity and her most outrageous sense of humor. If you were with Marla, you would be laughing your heinie off, for sure! She was happiest when treating others to new experiences in travel, sports, concerts, etc. and going first class all the way. Special thanks to Dr. (just call me Susan) Tsai for her "beyond" loving care and friendship. Our additional thanks to Beth Krzywda, NP, and the nurses and staff of Moreland Reserve and 8NT of Froedtert Hospital. Thank you to Ashley from Horizon Home Care and to the team from Horizon Hospice. The family is grateful to all who left supportive messages on CaringBridge; Marla felt your love. To honor Marla's love of travel, the family will scatter her ashes at some of her favorite destinations. Even during her college days at Marla, she displayed utmost compassion towards animals and an unstinted dedication to her duties as a Veterinarian, despite classfellows jeering her on occasions.

She was a co student and a senior at PAU. Shared one course (Embryology) with me and got through it after I explained everything to her after the lecture. She loved animals and was a brave girl whom very few people understood. As I had been brought up reading American comics and novels, and my Dad getting his PhD from US, I could understand her better but was too immature to live up to her towering personality. I was bullied myself and grew up to be a strong person in later years. God bless her soul. I will remember her as a very confident and fun loving person.

On this, the anniversary of Dr. Marla's passing - I am happy to be able to share that Marla has been with us in our thoughts sooo often. I hear her laugh and see her smile in my head; I even hear her whispering in my ear when I wonder how to handle an issue with our new furry family member, Tyler. Marla's heart was so big, it doesn't surprise me that she still reaches out today. Our thoughts are with Mouna & Tico and Marla's family and especially Gayl. We're sending hugs and prayers for your comfort and the happiest of memories.

I first met Dr. Lichtenberger when she worked in the blue house at Westville, and at New Haven Animal Hospital in Connecticut. I remember her getting ready to go to New York for her extensive and prestigious training. I was sad to say, I never showed up at her party as I was out of town on business. She took care of my beloved sheltie and I trusted she would always provide the utmost care. My job brought me to the Milwaukee area where I participated in an animal CPR class. She was always the gold standard of vets and I feel privileged to have known her. - Kathleen E. McDonald

Dr. Marla became a very good friend to our family while caring for our little Toy Fox Terrier, Charlie. She gave us 4+ extra years together and we are eternally grateful. Her deep abiding love glowed from within her always smiling face and I'll never forget how very warm were her hugs and how generously she gave them. Her companionship during a pet crisis was angelic.
Having just read of her passing, we are grieving the loss of a very special and loved friend. With deepest condolences to Marla's loved ones...

So sorry to hear of Marla's passing and the death of her beloved friend Packer. I got to know her as a Vet at MECA. I got to love her as my friend. I will be forever grateful for the privilege of knowing this wonderful woman. She was an angel among us...her medical expertise, her compassion, her comforting loving nature. She was a godsend to the animals lucky enough to be in her care and to the people fortunate enough to know her. She will be deeply missed.

I was not a personal friend of Dr. Marla, I did, however, have the opportunity to meet her several times through her work at MECA. Marla always cared for my pets with expertise and compassion like no other. I was truly saddened to read about her ( and Packers) passing. May she truly be remembered for her generosity and skills
