Mary Stern Obituary

Stern, Mary Mayer Age 74, of Glendale, previously of Whitefish Bay and Thiensville. Died September 5, 2008. Mary was a deeply loved daughter, sister, mother, wife, aunt, grandmother, friend, confidant, career woman and lover of the richness of life. Born July 20, 1934, to Alexander and Adele Mayer (nee Hadler), she grew up in Thiensville, attended Downer Teachers College, and married Dr. Robert M. Stern (deceased) in 1955. Mary devoted many years to volunteer work at St. Michael's Hospital Emergency Center and St. Michael's Hospital Psychiatric Counseling Center, while raising her family of three children and developing a wide circle of friends and acquaintances who shared her love of family, friends and fun. In 1978 Mary became a surgical and physician's assistant to Dr. Lyle Swartz (deceased) and continued practice until retirement in 1997. Mary pursued creative interests in crafting stained glass and jewelry. She was an avid weekend fisherman; a devoted attendee of the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Milwaukee Symphony and other musical and creative arts events; an accomplished cook; a constant reader; and above all, a person with an abiding desire to connect to the lives of those she touched in work, in love and in friendship. Mary is survived by her son John and daughter Elizabeth of Mequon; daughter Julianne (Cary) Greenberg of Reston, VA; brother Thomas (Sue) Mayer of Mequon; grandchildren Jessie and Eran Greenberg, and Henry Stern; nieces Kelli, Kim and Kristi Mayer; stepmother Othelia Mayer; and friends and acquaintances throughout the area. Burial was Monday, September 8 at Lakefield Cemetery in Cedarburg. A reception will be held Thursday, September 11, from 4PM to 6PM at Schramka-Densow Funeral Home, 423 N. Main St., Thiensville, 262-242-3120. If desired, memorials may be made to the United Performing Arts Fund. Special thanks and gratitude to all those at Columbia St. Mary's Milwaukee MICU Unit.

My condolences. Although I did not know her well personally, I knew her well through Julie when we were in school together at Madison. I would have come to see you at the service, but read the paper too late to attend. My thoughts are with you all. Julie, I would like to hear from you. [email protected]

To Tom and all Mary's family, I want to express my sympathy. But more than that, I want to share some childhood memories that Mary and I would reminisce about on the rare occasions when we would get together.

When I would make my annual trek to Wisconsin from Ohio, I would occasionally call her and we would meet for dinner or lunch. One of us would surely mention "Maple Phosphates" which would inspire chuckles and giggles as we remembered riding our bikes while shouting "Full Speed Ahead" to Seifert's Drug Store (long gone), and ordering maple phosphates at the solid marble soda fountain. We were across-the-street friends, and the first time Mary invited me over after they moved in, we played a game called Big Apple at the kitchen table with baby "Tommy" watching from his buggy. That should tell you how long ago our friendship started.

We had great imaginations in our childhood play. Sometimes we were cowboys, sometimes mad scientists, sometimes we actually played house, sometimes we fished down at the river behind the barn. But the most fun was playing "Tarzan" in the Mayer orchard. Mary was "Sheena, Queen of the Jungle". I was Camilla. We each staked out our own tree to "live" in. We continued to play this wonderful game until we started to notice the boys, or maybe it was when the boys noticed us...up in the trees! When they wanted to know what we were doing up in those trees, all tree-climbing stopped.

Yes, we had many happy memories of our childhood. My only regret is that I didn't call her during my visits to Wisconsin the last few years. We always believe we have more time.
And then time runs out.

Blessings to all of you.
