Michael Hawkins Obituary

Dr. Michael K. Hawkins

Carlsbad - Dr. Michael K. Hawkins died peacefully in Carlsbad, California on Wednesday January 22nd at the age of 78.

Michael is survived by his wife of 55 years Kathleen (nee Russell), son John Hawkins (Sara Nawaz), of Cincinnati, Ohio and daughter Jaqueline Lynds (Kevin Lynds), of Carlsbad, California, and his brother Charles Hawkins (Janice Hawkins) of McFarland, Wisconsin, his sister-in-law Patricia DuFay of Malibu, California and his brother-in-law Jack Russell (Danette Tennison) of Helena, Montana and two wonderful grandchildren Jayden and Kai Lynds as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his father Edward Hawkins and mother Muriel Hawkins (nee Blackwood), of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Michael was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He grew up in Bay View and graduated from Bay View High School. He attended Marquette University while putting himself through school by working at Allis-Chalmers. While in college, he met his future wife Kathleen, and they married on December 24th, 1964. He continued his education at Marquette eventually obtaining a PhD in clinical psychology in 1974. He practiced clinical psychology for over 25 years in the Milwaukee area. He established a thriving practice and was widely admired and respected by both his colleagues and clients. The consistent experience with all of his relationships was his kindness and empathy.

Michael raised his family in Muskego, Wisconsin, living in the same home for over 40 years. He and Kathi were devoted parishioners of St. Leonard's church. They loved a fish fry at Bushy's and Matty's and pizza at Alpine Lanes and workouts at the Wisconsin Athletic Club in Hales Corners. Michael was a devoted fan of the Packers, Brewers, Badgers, Golden Eagles and the Bucks. During his last two years in California, he would frequently be the guy wearing a Packer or Badger hat or sweatshirt. You couldn't take the Wisconsin out of him. He was happiest when he was able to spend quiet time with Kathi at their condo north of the Wisconsin Dells or spending cherished time with family and friends.

More recently, Mike and Kathi transitioned to a retirement community called Carlsbad by the Sea in Carlsbad, California. This allowed him to be closer to his daughter and grandchildren, and despite the short 2 ½ years he was there, he spent many wonderful times with many new friends.

Plans for a memorial service are pending at this time. In leu of flowers, please consider making a donation to The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society or The Alzheimer's Foundation of America in his name.

I just heard about Mikes death and I am so sorry to hear this. I met Mike at De Paul 30 years ago and am so grateful that I had the opportunity to know him and to work with him over the years. I learned so much from him. My best to Kathi and the entire family. He always spoke so highly of all of you.

I remember, well, my own father's death in 1983, and my pervasive sadness. Mike was the psychology consultant at my agency. When he came to work that day, his voice clearly communicated his compassion and his support. His empathy was unmistakable. He helped me a great deal.

I wish to extend my deepest sympathy to Kathi, and the rest of family. It was aways obvious that Mike was a devoted father. He came to work one day, after dropping his son off at UW-Madison. He was very sad about the emptying nest. I'm sure he filled it in often with visits to Madison and welcomes home.

Oh my, so sorry to hear this. This is a blast from the past as I worked at De Paul, then Human Services Associates (Pathways) in Milwaukee in the 80's where he was a contracted psychologist.

I was in my twenties and had a crush on Michael and loved it when he had to come in for a client in the office!! Laid back, good sense of humor, adorable, smart Michael Hawkins!!

Please accept my sympathy Kathi, I know we've met and he talked about you alot. Didn't he call you Ro? i have photos, but they are so old they stick to the plastic pages in the photo album, ha!
God's Blessings,

Mike will always be remembered as a humble psychologist and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. DeDe and I have fond memories of you and Mike, the Southeastern days on Beloit Rd, basketball competition at DePaul Hospital, and special dinner engagements and the Pretty Lake 4th of July that you shared with us.

You are in our thoughts and prayers!

Kathy, I was so sorry to hear the news of Mike's passing. Please know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Mike was there for me when I needed him, way back in the mid-seventies. As a UWM grad student he saw something in me and promptly offered me a job at graduation. We worked together for 12 years at DePaul. He supported me in our work together, coached me when I was in doubt and cheered me on when work went well. He believed in and trusted me when I was still wet behind the ears. I loved his straightforwardness, humility and dry sense of humor. My feeble attempt to find him and catch up failed the past few years. I regret that. Had we caught up, I would have expressed my gratitude with a simple thanks. He was one of a handful of folks in my life that left a lasting positive impression. So let me say to you and your family, thanks for sharing him with me and many others. Take care.

Mike was one of the warmest gentlest men I have ever known. His lack of ego was always clear as he never needed to be the focus of attention. He ran the clinical staffings at PCC not from the position of having the answers but instead trying to facilitate healthy dialogue among people with a variety of backgrounds and perspectives. He was missed when he left Pathways and will be missed now

Mike was a friend, colleague and supervisor for me for 27 years. He was one of the nicest human beings I have ever had the privilege to know. My condolences to Kathi and his children.

Mike was a boyhood friend at Trowbridge School. We were in Cub Scouts together and on the Bay View football team. I'm not surprised that he led such a successful life. If someone were to ask me who in your life was the most-liked person the answer would be Mike Hawkins. My deepest condolences.
