Norman Bernstein Obituary

Bernstein, Norman N. Of Mequon, died on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, at the age of 85 from congestive heart failure and Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Norman, who lived in Bayside for 41 years until moving to the Sarah Chudnow Campus in Mequon two years ago, had been vice-president of the family-owned Milbrew, Inc., of Juneau and Antigo, WI, working there for nearly 40 years. He graduated from UW-Madison in 1943 with a bachelor's degree in chemistry before heading to Oak Ridge, TN, for two years to work on producing heavy water for the highly secretive federal Manhattan Project, a project that ultimately produced the atomic bomb. He returned to get his master's degree in biochemistry from UW-Madison, graduating in 1948. Norman will always be remembered for his gentle humor, generosity and calm intelligence. He loved photography, which he used to chronicle family trips and events for decades. He also enjoyed a winter home in South Palm Beach and liked to play golf. He kept up with the latest advances in the field of chemistry. He is survived by Freida (nee Deitz), his wife of 63 years; his sons, Howard Bernstein (Barbara) of Madison and Leonard Saphire-Bernstein (Inger) of Chicago, IL; and his daughter, Judy, and her life partner, Laurie Tew, of Lake Luzerne, NY. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Laura Bernstein of Chicago and Tom Bernstein of Madison; Donni Saphire-Bernstein of Chicago, IL, Shimon Saphire-Bernstein of Princeton, NJ, Miri Saphire-Bernstein of Ramat Gar, Israel, and Evie Saphire-Bernstein of Jerusalem and Chicago, IL. He is also survived by his brother, Melvin Bernstein (Sharon) of Naples, FL, and a large extended family. Norman was a member of Congregation Shalom, the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, Hadassah Associates and the American Chemical Society. Memorial contributions made to the charity of your choice appreciated. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 11, at 12:30 PM, AT THE FUNERAL HOME. Burial to follow at Spring Hill Cemetery, 166 S. Hawley Ct., Milwaukee. GOODMAN-BENSMAN Whitefish Bay Funeral Home 4750 N. Santa Monica Blvd. 414-964-3111
