Patrick Coffey Obituary

Patrick Joseph Coffey

Patrick Joseph Coffey, of Wauwatosa WI, and raised in Brooklyn NY, was born in 1932 and entered into eternal life on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2020. Pat's spirit is carried on by his loving wife of 58 years, Maureen (nee Keegan), his four children Kathy, Kristin, Patrick and Colleen along with their spouses and life partners Henry, Chris, Bridget and Donovan, 8 grandchildren- Patrick, Abby, Nicolas, John, Maureen, Monica, Sarah and Nathan, surviving in- laws Sally, Rita, Roy and Marcia, and many nieces and nephews. Pat is additionally survived and loved by a number of close communities of friends, prayer partners, fellow AA members, circles and group members and colleagues from every walk of life.

We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Patrick during his 88 years on earth, among them: Value God and family first, be fair and authentic with others, ask for help, search for the truth, come clean and make amends, make the necessary changes to get it right as much as you can, show up and try. Always serve those who need, fish often and teach others to fish too. Keep humor and tenderness at the center, Ask questions, read, write, evolve and commit to lifelong learning. Feed the hungry, correspond with the imprisoned and make time for folks trying to work the program - be kind.

Patrick was a Philosophy professor in ethics and medical ethics at Marquette University for 28 years. He chaired the department for 8 years and chaired and served on medical ethics committees at the medical college of WI and for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.

Anyone who knew Pat Coffey would tell you he was a fisherman. He was an avid lake fisher and shared his love with as many as he could, with a trip for some "good eats" and fellowship afterwards. Patrick and Maureen were one of the founding families of the St. Bens meal program, the Ignatian Associates, the Gesu Meal Program and the Gesu Haiti project. Patrick was a proud veteran of the army and worked as a supply Sargent during the Korean War.

Patrick's greatest accomplishment and joy was the family he had with his deeply adored and beautiful bride, Maureen. He is and was so loved and will be so missed!

Memorial service will be held at a later date due to the current pandemic. The family hopes to celebrate Pat's life with you then!

He was my teacher, my mentor, and he became my friend. He has gone before us to prepare the way for us.

To Maureen - I read in the Marquette Alum Magazine about Patrick's death. I'm writing with sorrow for you and all of your large family --- yet also to say how glad I am that you got to spend your life together and raise a large, loving family.

We lost touch after our years at Marquette. But I have a clear, clear memory of you and he on
a day in 1960, at the end of a spring semester. Patrick had just said goodbye to you and walked away down the sidewalk, swinging a closed up umbrella. He was leaving for the seminary and you thought your life would go on without him. It was so clear that you loved each other, and sure enough, you later resumed that love and married for decades to come. I'm so glad your story went that way, that you had all those years and experiences of a life together.

I'm living in a very small town in Maryland, about 30 miles from downtown DC. I'm healthy, vaccinated, active in community groups. My first marriage ended in 1981. Ten years later I married John Menke and we've had 30 years of work, laughter and love that have passed so quickly it seems like 3. His two sons and my two daughters are our shared kids, plus grandkids and now great grands.

I send my hopes that you find comfort in memories sharing your new solo life with family/friends during this time of sadness.

Peace to you, M E G

I know apples don't fall far from the tree...I only know young Pat. He is one of the nicest men I have had the pleasure of teaching with at BEHS. I can only imagine the loss of "senior" Pat's impact on family and friends. Life and relationships are precious.

Dear Colleen and Family,
Having read Patrick Joseph Coffey's Obituary I now know why Colleen and I are so similar. My dad's obituary was filled with many of the same phrases when he passed away 2 years ago. He sounds like a wonderful man and I know you will all miss him terribly. No matter how old we are, losing a parent, spouse, brother, friend, or colleague is a life altering experience. Be kind to yourselves and make time to grieve and celebrate the life you shared. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

He was a wonderful brother-in-law and friend. Roy and I have many wonderful memories of Pat. The many trips to 280 N. Sheldon in Richland Center, camping at Gov Dodge and the family being here during the first days of ownership of Classics. I could go on and on!
He was a wonderful kind Irish man, who loved his family and his faith.
God bless him we were lucky to share his life!

Dearest Coffey and related Family members,
What a beautiful tribute to a man who made a difference in many many lives. I have the privilege of being a dear friend of Kristin since our roommate days while attending UW Madison.
When visiting the Coffey family and conversing with Dr. Coffey, it was ALWAYS like a massage for my brain. A man whom every time I left a visit made me feel validated and special. Dr. Coffey had a profound way of staying in the moment years before it was a buzz phrase. I always learned from him however brief our visits were.
His spirit WILL most definitely live on!
Rest In Peace Dr Patrick Coffey, you are already so dearly missed. Thank you for giving me a beautiful friend.
Godspeed to you all. ♥☮
