Just a note of gratitude for having had the distinct honor and benefit of having Dr. Richard Ripple as the Chair of my graduate program. Professor Ripple stood among a few faculty and administrators whom I understood clearly advocated for tautological epistemology. As a professor he provoked debate, discourse and decision, grounded in empirical truth. As a friend he imparted faith in that truth.
Professor Ripple once advised me: "......politics used to get in the way of education, now education gets in the way of politics".
His contributions and insights live on -

Dr. Ripple was likely the most honorable man I was blessed with studying under. He made a tremendous impact with his life.

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.

There is an old adage which I believe applies to Dr. Ripple:

"..those who have lived well for their
time - have lived well for all time."

It was an honor and pleasure to know Dr. Ripple. He enjoyed sharing life in all ways and shared his with dignity and class. I found him an intellectual light at Cornell. His desire and ability to explore and engender creative thinking kept him forever young and truly a social peer among his students. He stood apart as an intellectual not afraid of new ideas. Cornell's Department of Education was blessed to have enjoyed true tautological excellence under his chairmanship. His students will take him with them into every classroom.... his spirit will truly live on. May we meet again in heaven -

Please accept my heartfelt condolenses on the passing of my all time favorite teacher. I was in the first class that he taught at Dover Street School in Milwaukee. I will never forget the enthusiasm and energy he brought to us kids. He made every day in class, a day that we looked forward to. I have thought about him fondly over the years. A very good man went to Heaven and I am sure all who knew him were richer for his friendship.

My condolences to the Ripple family. I will always remember Richard. He was one of the original members of the "Fantastic Four" at the Ithaca Country Club gym! He had claim to the stationary bike! Richard certainly made an impact on my life. He is now in Heaven with God and the angels, making them smile and laugh.

God bless you and your wonderful family. I was in the first class he ever taught and as a young girl truly thought he was a wonderful teacher. He not only taught about Alaska but he embarked on anything and everything you wanted to know about the weather. He also at the time was a newly - wed and spoke so enduring of his new beautiful wife. He was at the top of my list of favorite teachers. I am a new widow myself and my heart goes to his widow. Dianne Betker 3303 S. Indiana Avenue Bay View Wisconsin 53207

Dr. Ripple had great classroom presence. I took a course with him in the late 70s. As I said on the evaluation form, this teacher "is stunningly verbal and chic." Very cool guy.

Lynne and Mrs. Ripple, I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. How fondly I remember Dr. Ripple as the cool dad in the'60s and /70's wearing his puka shell necklaces! The other dads were definitely very staid in comparison! I know that his loss will be felt deeply by many in the Ithaca/Cornell community. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.
