I pray for the children and Grandchildren of my Brother Ronnie, and that their loss and sadness harkens, peace, love and an undivided family unity that no one can alter. I miss my brother on the stoop of our 4th & Center Street youth. I will remember him as my protector during our early education and middle school years. I have fond memories of your helping me to steady to walk when I was shackled in leg braces. You were my childhood defender when those sought to single me out. I marveled at your ability to bond and make friends like be the Best Man for “Jim Turner”, and work and eat Ostrich Meat from “Rich Prihoda”. I will miss your skill to not only “fish” but take them off the hook for the both of us. I smile at our raucous card games and your “cheating” laughter. Our trips on the bus to Marc's Big Boy Restaurant, Third Street-Gimbel's, The Discount Store, Woolworth's, Inner City Art's Council, Bowling, Wrestling Matches at the Arena, Oasis and Drive-In Movies. We got to know a Family in Fox Point who once owned a “Piggly Wiggly” and they served us Hot Dogs, Chex Mix, Grape Crush, Ginger Ale and A&W Sodas. We marched with Father Groppi and when the riots hit our neighborhood we chanted with the “Black Panthers” you told me things were going to be better in Milwaukee just I wait and see. We bought “Penny Candy with Bottles we collected like: Wax Lips, Chico-Stix, Mary Jane's, Slow Pokes, and Sugar Babies. You made the “best” Stove Top Pop Corn and hogged the French Fries. You were an M.V.P. of C.O.A.'s Camp Sydney Cohen-Swimming, Water Skiing, and Canoeing on those annual camping weeks. You could chew a whole pack of “Big Mouth Bubble Gum” and you would not share the “Jolly Ranchers”! You made us dizzy in the mornings after teasing us, putting us in head locks or “the claw”. You could make us look away while taking some of our Cheerios or Captain Crunch cereal. You were the expert at shooing the kids away from Grandma's Plum trees. You loved you some Government Grilled Cheese & Grape Jelly sandwiches, and Saturday morning Bugs Bunny Shows. We had fun after cleaning the “Wood Paneled Walls, the afternoon Lone Ranger and any and all Westerns. You perfected scaring us after watching Godzilla, Creature from The Black Lagoon, The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, Abbott and Costello meets this or that monster, Twilight Zone and The Night Gallery shows. I miss all the animals you talked Mom into letting us have, except for that one cat “Tina” that kept peeing in Mom's plants and it knocked over our Silver Aluminum Christmas tree and color reel. I'm glad we were able to keep her kittens “Buffy, Jody, Sissy and Mr. French. You taught me that “Kato” was the true star of the Green Hornet. And that Superman would beat Batman any day! I'm really sorry about the “Fire Cracker in the Cigarette” incident on Nora's front porch…it was meant for someone else. I wished we never moved on North 21st Street! I appreciate how you "bragged" I was a good cook too! I will forever marvel at your self-taught “Concrete finishing skills”. And I have a deep and deafening regret that the world was not kinder, gentler to your person, and that it did not get all that I know you could have been. I will draw comfort and relief that you now have eternal peace. Love, your favorite little sister Bernadine.
