Sheldon Cohn Obituary

Cohn, Sheldon Francis Died peacefully on April 15. Born in Chicago, IL March 9, 1925. Husband of 68 years to Joy (Nee van Minden). Father of Daniel Jeffery (Deborah), Janis Laurel (Stephen Hargarten), and Lawrence (Larry) Roger (Jan Fajer). Proud World War II veteran, having the unique experience of being one of the few Jewish guards of German POWs both in the US and Europe. Long-time resident of Milwaukee, the last 52 years in Fox Point. Co-owner of Bon-Ton Beverages of Waukesha for many years prior to founding Cascade Supply Corp with his wife in 1971. He was a consummate raconteur, dedicated historian, geography buff, avid reader, fabulous dancer, lover of big band music, enthusiastic tennis player and active bicyclist well into his 70's. People often were brought to tears of laughter by his many stories and life experiences. Sheldon was honest, dedicated, and loyal to his wife, family and friends, a mentor to more than one and a generous supporter of environmental and social justice causes. A hard worker and a straight shooter in business who was full of compassion and never took the credit he deserved. (He would have hated such praise about the exemplary life he lead). The simplest positive thoughts, kind deeds and informed sayings will be his most enduring legacy to his children. Sheldon is survived by his wife Joy, his three children, a handful of very close friends and four grandchildren (for whom he always had a lemon drop in his pocket): Simon Cohn, Jordan (Josie) Hargarten, Leah Hargarten, and Beth (Craig) Nance. Family and friends will gather to celebrate Sheldon's life on Sunday, April 22 at Chai Point, 1400 N. Prospect Ave. from noon-4PM. If inclined, a contribution in his name to any of the following would be appropriate: Southern Poverty Law Center www.splcenter.org, The Nature Conservancy www.nature.org, Amnesty International www.amnesty.org
