Shirley Ann Schanen Gruen

Port Washington, WI - Shirley Ann Schanen Gruen, age 97, formerly of the town of Grafton, WI and Port Washington, WI passed away peacefully Friday, December 11, 2020 at the Harbor Club in Port Washington where she had been residing.

She was born December 2, 1923 in Port Washington; daughter of William F. Schanen and Laura Leffingwell.

On February 1, 1947, Shirley married Gerald A. Gruen of Wilton Township near Sparta, WI at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Port Washington. He preceded her in death on February 5, 2010.

Her love of art was lifelong and she produced over 550 paintings. Mostly watercolor on paper with some acrylic on canvas, she was inspired by her love of Port Washington and Lake Michigan. Shirley's works won numerous awards at juried shows and were admired by many.

Shirley operated the Shirley Gruen Studio and Gallery on Franklin Street in Port Washington that thrived for 39 years.

Family services held. Interment St. Mary's Cemetery, Port Washington, WI.

Memorials to the Port Washington Historical Society (www.pwhistory.org), Environmental Defense Fund (www.edf.org) or the University of Wisconsin Foundation (www.supportuw.org) appreciated.

Survived by her children Gerald A. (Jean) Gruen, Jr. of Port Washington, Lorelei (Kirk) Hosler of Melbourne Beach, FL and Lorna (Bill) Nagler of Sarasota, FL; grandchildren Deirdre (James) Coder, Brett (Enpei) Hosler and Ty (Linda) Hosler, great-grandchildren Evelyn, Breane, Cassandra and Arthur; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She is preceded by her husband Gerry, her sister Betty Schanen and brothers Robert Schanen and William F. Schanen Jr. and his wife Marie.

We just found out about Aunt Shirley. Mark and I were so sad to hear that she had passed. We are thinking about you all with Love.
We lost our Dad on Sept 22 this year and our mom Oct 18th 2018. It is so difficult. Send me your addresses when you can. [email protected]
