Shirley Hess Obituary

(Nee Knack) Age 86 years, May 1, 2005 from Ruth Hospice went on to explore the infinite perfection of God's Love. Loving wife and companion for 45 years of the late Hamilton Hess. Dear mother of Lloyd (Deb), Bernd (Susan), Albert (Sylvia), Helen (Vincent), and the late, much missed, Frederic. Caring grandma to Travis, James, Natalia, Alex, Elizabeth, Jake, Dominick, Esther, Liliana, Anthony, Peter, and the late Nathaniel. Loving sister of Harley (Dolly) Knack.

Shirley proudly served her country as a member of the Women's Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946 in a just cause.

Shirley was a member of the Mother Church of Christ Scientist for 68 years. She was also a devoted member of the Fourth Church of Christ Scientist, Milwaukee, for many years. Her faith led her through life and sustained her during her final days. Her outlook and spirit are made clear in her poem from 1984:

When I set sail on that

last trip into some

vast beyond, ---

Do not mourn, or weep, or

say "How sad!"

But say to me - "Bon Voyage!"

For that's what it shall be --

A grand, exciting exploration

--such wondrous discovery.

Being shed of this cocoon,

finally, to learn about this vast Eternity.

Perhaps sometime to understand.

A private service was held by the family. Memorials may be sent to The Downtown Christian Science Reading Room, 706 N. Milwaukee St., Milwaukee, 53201 and/or Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum, 2220 N. Terrace Avenue, Milwaukee, 53202.
